Dear Helpful HHOers!
My OH has got a job north of York, just east of Thirsk (Ampleforth area). I'm currently pondering whether to join him there or not! We are getting married next year, but I need to find a job there too in order for things to work.

I'm already looking and we are not in a rush luckily.

But what is the horse scene like up there? Are there plenty of livery yards or is it mainly farmers who rent fields? I only have the one horse at the moment so I have no diva demands!

Thanks in advance!

Ha, thanks! It will be great if I can get a job there too!

We're hoping to make a trip up there in a few weeks for a look around, so it'd be nice to have a few places to go and view.

Ampleforth is lovely, very country side, lots of little yards as well as private places, so depends what you want.
Work wise you'd prob have to travel, Helmsley/Thirsk or even out to York/Scarborough depending on what you do.
Hope you have a decent car, it's like living on the side of a hill, gorgeous when sun shining, but you sure know about it when it snows!

LOADS of horses up this way (well I'm a bit lower down than there - near Wetherby - but regularly compete at the likes of North Allerton EC/Richmond/Helen Bells etc). Great countryside too. York, Scarborough even Harrogate (not too far?) would probably be best places to look for work. Although my geography is crap and I can't actually think where Ampleforth is!

We are between Thirsk and York but have our own place so not up on all the livery yards. The GeeGee centre at Raskelf has fab facilities but may be a bit far for you. There is a livery yard in Easingwold advertises in the little local paper.
The White Swan in Ampleforth is the best place for a meal in the area (IMO anyway!)

Ampleforth is a small place, your nearest town is Helmsley, which is imho geared towards day trippers. There is a Tesco etc in thirsk, I'm not sure if Helmsley has a big supermarket? The easiest route to Thirsk is down Sutton Bank which is often blocked and suffers from slow moving traffic.
It's a beautiful part of the country, and there are plenty of horsey things going on..... but it's a bit of a drive to anywhere from there I think.
The weather is HARSH up sutton bank, very windy and cold. I don't know how sheltered ampleforth is from the elements?
Eating out wise, I've not tried the white swan mentioned above, but you've got the hare at scorton and the star at harome (which has a michelin star) and is amazing

Personaly I'd rather live a bit closer to a more sizable town and better road network, but I guess it depends on what you're used to?

Thanks for all the info guys - much appreciated!

I am a research scientist, so job wise I'm pretty limited to York or Harrogate I think. OH is going to be working at the college, so not much chance of living anywhere other than Ampleforth really.

I'm prepared to live seperately for a year or so, but the thought of it isn't much fun. Still, if it's meant to be something will turn up!

My inlaws live near Malton, which is about 10 miles away. Its a stunningly beautiful area, very very horsey!

Also, the Star at Harome is great, and pretty reasonably priced.

Good to know it's horsey!! I was in the TA in Leeds for a while and we spent lots of time at Ripon and Catterick. I also spent a week at Leeming, so I know the area roughly speaking.

Good food is always a bonus.

Shame you are tied to Ampleforth, as there is the likes of Wilton where I work - over near Middlesbrough - which has labs and is a big chemical base. (Google the Wilton International site)

Unless you plonk somewhere in between the two and both commute!
