Yorkshire peeps - FMC needs a geography lesson

If you're going to be working in Barnsley you could think about Sheffield too.
To original question a very general response - Anything leeds and north is pricey. South is cheaper but don't forget to look west (Bradford/Huddersfield/Halifax/keighley).

Would love Sheffield but think would be too far for me to commute to Harrogate.

Huddersfield looks commutable for both of us......

I live near Huddersfield. Some areas are gorgeous, others aren't. The weather will be a shock for you. Bring some woolies - for the summer! Stunning countryside.... Pretty hilly - your southern horses will not know whats hit them! My friend brings her eventer up from Lincs every year for a holiday, and it really struggles with the hills!

It would probably take me a good hour to drive to Harrogate - more if I have to go near Leeds in the rush hour...

Hahaha! Yes, I'm not good with the cold. Think I will need a new coat :D

Think I will have the longer commute, but I can work flex so can start early/finish early if I want.

Now am fretting about finding somewhere to rent with 3 dags!!

Check out any town on the Wharfedale Train line - goes from Ilkley to Leeds in 25 minutes. I live in Burley In Wharfedale - we have a really good yard in this village that doesn't advertise that would meet your criteria (PM me)
However, when I'm not working from home just getting to Leeds by car at rush hour takes me 40 minutes (and I know the cut throughs).
The M62 & M1 get very busy, and slow moving at rush hour too.
Harrogate takes about 30 minutes to drive from Ilkley - its a nice drive too.
Bramhope, and surrounding area is nice, and quite handy, and Bramhope side of Horsforth has some nice parts, and the train station at Horsforth goes to Harrogate and Leeds (the Wharfedale line goes to Leeds only - but through Burley In Wharfedale, Menston & Guiseley)
Keighley is a bit of a nightmare to travel through Bingley - I wouldn't choose to live there.
Look at places on the A61 corridor - although this is prime commuter belt for Leeds.
Wikefield Livery is on the A61 and has fab hacking on the Harewood estate - you'd never need to go on the road again. This is handy for anywhere on the A61, and Bramhope etc (I used to get there in 20mins from Ilkley too)
My knowledge of South Leeds is poor, but for a commute South, i'd suggest being nearer to the A1.
PM me if you need any further info - ive lived in the Ilkley area for 30 years, and did a lot of property views on behalf of my parents when they moved back North, and covered Harrogate, & lots of villages North of the A59 - theres a big yard at Birstwith with great facilities off this Road, and it's a lovely area, but a mahoosive commute for you.
Also use Googlemaps & Street view - i find this very useful to see whats going on in the area
Good Luck

I am smack bang in the middle of where you want to be A1/ M62 intersection by Ferrybridge services lots of nice areas around here to rent several livery yards close by:)

I'm in Doncaster which is kinda between both. Like most places there's some nice parts & nasty parts! Barnby Dun, Kirk Bramwith, Braithwaite are nice rural ish parts with a few livery yards about xx

Vet School? Surely it's miles from the nearest vet school??

I was thinking that - where is this yorkshire vet school and why did I not know of it two years ago? :p would have been much easier than moving to the north west...

No idea on which areas are nice FMC, but the entire of yorkshire is better than just over the border here in nottinghamshire - we don't have a single BD venue! whereas yorkshire has several :)

Budget? Are you renting/buying/need space for horses?

I live about 2mins from Brahman, so I would think further south than me. I would suggest aberford which is right next to A1, Woodlesford Is ok, Ledston is smack bang in the middle of the M62, M1, and A1, is a nice village with equestrian centre with indoor arena (nice but getting dated sadly).

There are some nice places in Wakefield, nicer than you'd expect, I was certainly shocked when I first went there, I drive half an hour to see my hairdresser in Wakefield, but he's very camp so it's worth it  :D

Tis so weird to see names of places VERY close to me mentioned on here Lol

I was liveried at Ledston for a time. But they charged more then it was worth. Was only a grass livery there :) Miss that arena though

Dont go west of Leeds, its a nightmare travelling. I lived in Ilkley and commuted to Wakefield and then Northallerton.

If you stick close to the A1/M1 its not bad. Although the M1 gets clogged from 41 down at times and the M62 is dreadful at times west of Ferrybridge and seems to get worse the further west you go.

I go to a lot of meetings in the Badsworth area, if I had to move South of Leeds I think that the area I would look in.

Some great advice - thanks :)

Somewhere off the A1 round Pontefract/Wakefield could work for you. Some nice villages round there too. Manor Grange Stud is close by - not sure if they do livery and don't appear to be as busy this year as previously but might be worth a look: http://www.manorgrangestudsc.com/index.asp

Oooh will take a look thanks :)

Really helpful thank you!

Thank you all for such useful, detailed replies.

Things have ramped up a little this morning and look likes one of us may be going up there in August

All this from a musing on potential things we could do, last weekend......amazing how quickly life can change around :D:rolleyes::o

Sorry to be so cryptic...am unbelievably excited but cant tell until all is finalised

I've just moved up North from down South (Oxfordshire/Buckinghamshire) and yes, Yorkshire has a climate of it's own, it's almost bipolar!

I've moved to Sheffield, and keep my horse about a 5 minute drive from where I live and I'm straight out onto the Peaks. I can't really be very helpful on areas, as I've only lived here just over a month and just about know how to get to work and Tesco!

But despite things being a bit 'Northern' it is really rather nice :)
