Been a long time since I have wondered around HF horse sales... used to go with my mum years ago, odd time we came back with one we felt sorry for....as you do.

Is it still on?

Are they many there, do they still charge you a pound to look round at the sorry states?

How much are the young gypsy type cobs going for these days? last time I went (when coloured were the the up and coming thing) they were passing hands for £1000's even the yearlings.

I miss my cob, worse thing I ever did was sell him

, I had a healthy, go anywhere do anything horse (well pony) I'd just load up and go hunting/XC showing, never sick or sorry, ride him anywhere in any traffic, and was loyal and had a wonderful intelligant and kind temperement, just leaves a huge lump in my throat, why oh why did I sell him, my OH warned me I'd be making a huge mistake...and I have.

Will I just torture myself by going to look round at some hairy ugly coblet babies (just how I like em)

and I'd be able to give one such a lovely home..

do I ..dont I?

Not been for ages but yes its still on, there is nothing of quality pass through there last time i looked - and anything that does eg your coloureds are generally sold dealer to dealer outside the ring! It seems to be a dealer swapping yard.
A few go from the yard to get cheap rugs and stuff though

Yes, we never bought from the ring neither, come to thing of it just in the car park like you say, I'd only ever buy a baby anyway if I was going to get sucked in to buying anything that is, guess I'm just remenissing and wondering 'what if' I'd love to home a one of those scruffy hairy cob babies, they do make lovely riding ponies (any cob lovers will agree and see where I'm coming from).

Never bought any tack from the sale though, but did buy from Mr Wood's stall, does he still go?...does the sweety man still go,always used to buy some polo's from there for the horses, if anything they looked sad and in a strange place in pens...but a polo used to cheer the them up.

Once got bargain saddle from Lee Gap horse fair, we used to go there to wonder round too, do they still have that?

Used to see some rare sights though, loads of tinkers and well strange characters!!

Lee fair is just around the corner from me but again that seems to be very much for the travellers now! I remember going to Leefair as a youngster asking for rides on ponies and all were more than happy to let you ride it round for them. Mr Wood still goes but its the son that goes to holmfirth, I have a lot of time for mr Wood and still buy all my rugs and buckets etc off him, infact I used to livery with him - he saved my tb's life a couple of years back - he even did better than the vet. I'll be in debt to him forever!!

Yeah good old Piggy Wood...dont ask why I call him that, its a nick name by mother used to call him...again dont ask, as I've no idea, must be where I got my madness from lol!

Yes his son has certainly grown up, I can remember him when he was about 8 year old, we always used to go to his tack shop down that steep hill where he lived, where ever that was, nr Wakey I think, we used to live that in neck of the woods.

and going back a long long time ago my mum used to drag me around Pannel horse sales...no that was an eye opener! if people think HF was bad...then Pannel was horiffic! not the kinda of place to take a young horse mad daughter...it scarred me for life! but very educating all the same.

hmm those were the days.

John is still down that hill and never had the misfortune of going to pannel but heard the horroh stories! I only got into horses seriously when i bought Taf 3 years ago before then it was sit and go on my friends ponies so never even learnt to ride either. Hence now I have 2 beautiful babies that other people ride for me - still pleasurable all the same.
I'm just a very skint groom!

Hey, I went to holmfirth a few weeks ago. Its still got quite a ropey name for itself, and there looked to be some rather ill looking things there. I suppose it depends whether you can drop onto to something good, but I'd say 98% of their stock is not the kind of thing you would want to be buying.

Were you?

Well yes I can totally agree and see what your saying, specially if your talking about what I call nice fine looking riding horse type but you can sometimes drop on a nice cob...yes they will be in a pitiful state, bad hooves, worms, underweight, frightened etc...and god knows what else, but just sometimes these ugly ducklings turn out to be super little horses once they land themselves into the right homes.
My other cob which we bought 10 years ago, not from HF but of the back of wagon from a tinker, very thin, poor, deformed hooves, was a total state if ever you did see one at 15 months old. Took a while to get him right but he made an absolute cracker and still is to this day, I guess I'd love to be able to do that again..except this time not be daft enough to sell him but things were different then and I didn't know I was going to loose my old TB, otherwise I'd of still been able to manage/pay for and put time into 2 rather than what could of been 3 horses.

It's on every Saturday starts at 10.30 I think. I live in Holmfirth but rarely go to the sales. Last time we went there were a couple of horses being driven at frightening speeds along the main road and that just put me off going in. As others have said if you look hard enough you may find a little gem in the making but I'd definitely stick to the babies as anything older is there for a reason. Never seen anything that's made me look twice at it. Let us all know if you go for a nosey.

The last time I went they had a couple of very nice spotted animals, in reasonable nick, but they went for a good lot of money. The biggest problem with any adult mares is that they are always in foal, and no-one ever seems sure what to, or when due

i went on Sat last week. Couple of yearling coloured cobs but didnt stay for auction of horses so dont know what they made. Tack was going cheap tho. Lovely donkey foal had to be very stern with myself!!!!!Got a harry hall fleece for 4.00, e nglish hunter bridle for a tenner, and a kids john whitaker jacket brand new for 14.00. No one seemed to be bidding, guess everyone skint!!!!

I went a few years ago, looking for my stolen saddle, and both the police and a local councillor advised me to either not go, or take a friend, for my own safety. From what I could see, it was 95% gypsy sellers. There were one or two quite nice animals there, including a stallion, but the rest were rough ponies straight off the moors (still with the morning dew and brambles on them!). There was also a tiny foal, which was clearly ill with a very snotty nose, and I'm willing to guess, weaned that very morning. Someone had bought bags of carrots and was putting some in each pen, but the poor little sausage didn't have enough teeth to manage them. It was completely heartbreaking and I can't believe the sale is allowed to go on frankly. Well, I do - because the gypos would just carry on regardless of minor details such as the law and welfare. I didn't find my saddle, but there was one which was obviously stolen - still had a greasy and furry girth and numnah attached. Please don't go and buy anything - you are just encouraging the sellers to continue with such terrible standards.
