I've recently moved to York, and I've been told that there is local legislation in place requiring horse riders to clear up their horse's poo on public roads. I haven't been able to find any mention of this online (City of York authority area) - does anyone know one way or the other if this rule does exist?

Blooming hope not; hacking with a rucksack full of manure might remove some of the pleasure - not to mention having to get off and on all the time!

(I do stick to roads and wouldn't illegally ride on footpaths, etc, never mind leave poo on them!)

Ive never heard of that... It would be near impossible! Although I do think it's common curtosity to clear poo away from peoples drives and away from the shops etc. if possible
I gave got a funny pic that I will post a little later :p well it made me chuckle at the time! :D

I *think* that there are byelaws covering most of the UK that in populated areas, poo has to be removed by sunset. If mine poos in the village, I go back and remove it later on. Most people don't bother though, and no one has complained yet!!

Last summer, my mare decided to go to the loo in exactly the same spot, and I'd always go back asap in the truck with a brush and shovel to remove it, as I know myself, I'd get fed-up of my car tyres stinking of horse muck....it was right ouside someones drive way.

They were very grateful I was doing it, and told me so. Didn't take very long either to go clean it up...

Now, she was a new spot, which is out of the village and in the middle of nowhere....:D

I cant find anything referring to it on their website. I can only think that there may have been a rule made in respect of any horsedrawn carriage-y type businesses in the city who schlep around the same routes day in dayout and who therefore may cause an issue with quantity. You may get caught by the rule intended for them, if there is one.

There is definitely no national offence, because of the lack of health risks in comparison eg with dog mess and also the fact that horse poo washes away quickly in the rain.

Having said that in a built up area any poops deposited where people would find it hard to avoid (eg in front of entrances and driveways and crossing points) should be removed, straight away if safe or later on if not. Also on routes which are heavily used by other user groups where the route is narrow and so again, hard for them to reasonably avoid it.

Here in Scotland we can use routes which arent just bridleways, which is great but can make for some conflict over plops. BHS Scotland produced the following guide which is useful:

When I kept my horse in a rather urban area, gardeners would stand poised with shovels to pick up any droppings from the road for their roses.

Thanks, all. I've emailed the Council to double check.

I'd be quite happy to move / remove poo that was likely to cause anyone any problems, but picking up every poo every time would put me off hacking PDQ!

Well, I have lived in Yorkshire all my life and I have never heard of that one! Who told you? I am wondering whether it's something to do with the city of York itself and something harking back to carriage horses as was mentioned. I have certainly never picked up any horse poo before when I've been out hacking but then we live in a pretty rural area, we don't ride round very built up areas really.

In a local Yorkshire newspaper I saw a letter from a member of the public who (probably was new to rural life) who said that riders should be made to clear up horse poo as it was a health risk. I replied to the paper saying that horse poo was not in the same category as dog poo & fairly harmless & he should collect it for his garden.
May be some Yorkshire people are weird about poo!

There are horse drawn carriages in York, maybe it refers to the poohs being cleared up in the city centre? You aren't considering riding in the City Centre are you?

I'm Yorkshire born and bred and I've never come across this!
