Just a daft query really: do any yard owners out there charge less for ponies?

If so, then how do you determine a "pony"; is it by height or type, or what?, and if you do charge less for ponies, then (logically??) do you charge more for horses? Would you, for instance, (Q for liveries as well as YO's) expect to pay less for say a shetland, than you would for a 17.2?

So if someone came along with say a 14.1 or perhaps a 14.3, would you as a YO charge them for a "pony" or a "horse" - also there is the dilemma of whether a shetland would count as a "small pony" and be charged less? Or a thundering great horse of 17.2 being charged more?

Thoughts please!!

Never heard of that I must admit! Any yard I have been on, the livery charge is for your stable and field. What you choose to put in it is your shout so long as you look after it, and are pleasant and rule abiding!

Quite a lot of yards round near me (who offer part or full liveries) have horse and pony rates. Usually the pony rate is anything under 14.3hh

It makes sense if the yard is providing the feed, although it would make more sense if you had a good doer rate and a poor doer rate :D but I suppose that isn't as clear cut.

I wouldn't at the end of the day, a shetland will take up a box, the same as a 17.2. So equally they should pay the same :) Unless of course, you had 14x14 for the 17.2 and a 12x12 for the shetland :)

I charge the same rate whether horse or pony. I have a horse who lives out in the summer due to breathing problems (paddock with shelter), he pays the same livery fee as those stabled but I deduct the cost of his bedding. Owners are quite happy with this.

HI, I charge the same. A pony still takes up a stable that a horse could go in. :) Also ususally have children attached to them which to me should mean you charge more!!!! LOL

A yard i went to look at charged £20 for anything 14.2 and under and £25 a week for anything above 14.2 thats the only yard in my area that seems to do this.

My old yard included hay and straw in the winter - summer everyone paid the same.
In winter there was a pony and horse rate for the hay and straw.

My YO charges £35 for a pony (no mucking out at weekends, £40 with) and £45 for a horse (no mucking out at weekends, £50 with), I guess over 14.2 is horse and anything under is pony

If on grass livery pony under 13hh's its £7, due to ethier beening muzzled or on a bare patch. anything over its the normal £10 rate, winter depends on if it needs a stable but if it does then its the same across the board, all the stables are 12x14 so it doesnt matter whats in it. one livery has 2ponies in one stable 11hh so then its full price for the first and 1/2price (grass livery) for the other. We did have smaller stables which were 11x10 but due to demand they have have been made bigger but they were 3/4 the horse price. if that all makes sence?

My DIY price includes hay and straw due to lack of space and this is the same across the board. I have come across some very greedy 12.2's and then some very picky fussy 17hh! It makes no sense to me to charge less for a pony. Like someone said - they're still taking up a box!

Where I am you pay according to the size of your stable. When it comes to the adlib hay again it depends on the size of the horse and how much they have.

The yard where I keep my horses only charges different for grass livery - they have one price for under 14hh and another for 14hh and over. DIY stabled livery, etc everything is the same price.

My yard charges less for pony stables as they are smaller, its £100 a month instead of £110. I think it would be unfair to charge the same price for the smaller stables as there is quite a difference in size.

I do.

Sliding scale. Up to 14h. 14h plus, and DRAFTS!
I couldn't possibly charge the same for say, a mini as I do for a stonking great 18h Belgian!

All my boarders are on full pasture board and I base rates on how much hay I feed (a mini eats as much in a week as a Belgian does in a day). Board is basic, hay, water, shelter and daily maintenance.
Anything else (grain, supplements, wormer etc, etc) and they pay me for it or supply it themselves. Stalling is an additional flat rate, a mini would use the same size stall as a draft, and I still have to clean out, hay etc.

i think it depends on if you are on full livery or not as most ponies will not eat as much as a horse or if you have pony boxes - on our yard which is diy ponies same price as horses but it does not include food and all the stables are huge - my pony would not be happy in a pony sized box as he likes his space. as others have said the box could be used for any size so why charge less for a pony.

most the the full livery yards though do have pony prices based on under 14.2.
