YOs - "opening times"?

I think the main problem is that it is a farm, rather than a yard. The two seem to have rather different ways of doing things (or maybe its just the one I'm at!). Because everyone is DIY, the YO just nips out to get her horse in and feed her (I put her out in the morning), and thats it. The farmer (her husband, so really YO too) is generally around the farm, just not when I need them! I think I'll need to have a word with them and sort it out, find out what they actually mean!

I am at a yard that is also a farm, probably abut 30-40 horses and I think it is really relaxed.
There don't seem to be "rules" as such or opening hours. there is normally at least one livery there at 5 am and normaly at least one pops up at 10pm. The YO pops up here there and everywhere and it is a case of grab him when you see him to pay/ask for haylage etc.
He is very friendly and accomodating and you can always knock on his door if the lights are on, although I don't like to as I know he will pop up again within 24 hrs

I try not to disturb him and if we need to know anything it, like they are shooting etc then it is written on the board where you book the school.

I think it works really well.

WE have a large wipe clean white board on the corridor of 1 stable block and a bag with loads of pens in it. Everything is written on there.
Wormers due ??? date (YO gets them for us and we pay her).
Fork muck on top of muck heap.
Sweep up after yourselves.
Can anyone feed my horse for me on Friday pm if I leave eveything ready?
When hay and straw deliveries are coming
When the farrier is coming.
The vet is coming on such and such a date anyone need them and we can share call out.
Has anyone got a ????? that I can try to see if it works for my horses e
etc etc etc.
Works for us

Some of my clients even get a little o.t.t with the texts. we are open from 7.30am to 6.00pm, that is staffed man hours i am frequenly on the yard until 8pm teaching, outside this the yard is open as the clients have access to their own keys and know the combination number for the top gate. It is in their livery agreement what their responsibilities are and mine to them. I also dont have D.I.Y liveries, so clients only come in the evenings to pat thier ponies and ride. In the office there is the diary which has my schedule on as well as the yard details there is a note book where i can be left notes . By the tack room we have a large whiteboard on which messages are left regarding worming, farriers, dentists, physio and turn out. and also where clients can let me know if they want their horses left in or they have questions. My phone is never switched off.. i may choose to sometimes ignor the texts as for examlpe a client did text at 2am in the morning because they wanted to know if they should have extra rugs! they may not get a sensible reply until the next day!!!!
As a YO i do appreciate that 'you' are the clients but as a responsible YO that we do have a life and every effort is made to keep the lines of communication open as this keeps the whole yard happy this takes respect from both parties. We have a good atmosphere on our yard because of this open policy. I'm affraid in lots of respects you get what you pay for, it is expensive to have staff 'on call' and to offer this you have to have a product worth the money . One of the things i constantly talk to my staff about is the value of communication.
Sorry that your yard isnt so well organised but running a yard is no gravy train so sometimes cut the YO a little slack and i'm sure they will do the same for you .

we've always arranged with YO's if we will be out early or back late and would never disturb them unless it was important. I've always appreciated that in most cases this is their home and I'm gratefull for the use of the facilities and for somewhere for the nag to live.

On the other hand - and it is a balance -they take money from me and for that I expect to be able to see my horse and do my jobs at reasonable times, and have what I pay for - stable and turnout and in somecases hay and bedding. I would not expect to be left without hay, water, bedding or light for example and in that case they would have to be disturbed to provide it!

But I would never be like Tia's stalker owner!!!!

And when I said someone taking the wee wee - I meant I guess one livery has been taking the piddle and the YO was reacting to it...

Its annoying because when I moved up there, there were no opening times, its just a new thing they've started ( I think its more for potential liverues, than the ones thay already have) It could be worse though, at my old yard horses had to be in before it was dark which was a nightmare!

same at mine!i specifically asked if there any restrictions.
YOs can pretty much do what they want though.we need some kind of legislation to protect both Yos and owners.
