Where does the time go? 5 years ago to this day, I invited a funny pink welsh cob into my life. For the next 12 months I wondered what on earth I had done, but slowly but surely she turned from devil pony to complete angel and I feel incredibly lucky to have her. Thought I'd do a little post looking back at our journey so far :)

Kira was supposed to be a little project while Millie was recovering from an injury. She came from a friend of a friend, who had a riding accident with Kira when she lived in France and it had basically just unravelled to the point where K was turned away until she was ready to part with her. This was the only photo I saw before going to get her :p I thought from her owner's description that she probably just needed whipping into shape and then I'd sell her as a RC pony, finally releasing some funds to buy the WB I've always wanted...

Turned up at the yard with the lorry and it took 2 people to drag her down the field. I fell in love with her little curly ears but it was clear she wasn't just turned away, she was feral. We manhandled her onto the box and took her home, where she instantly fell in love with Millie (she'd been kept on her own for a few years so she was just thrilled to see another horse :( )

So this was the starting point. I have never seen such a fat horse and i think she must have some kind of incredible luck to not be laminitic

I couldn't get a saddle on her because they just bobbled around like a pea on a trampoline, so I started out just doing some low key groundwork and getting to know her. Eventually it was time to get on, and she clearly remembered what all that was about because I just climbed straight on without any drama, but that didn't last long because I soon uncovered a major napping problem. She wouldn't go up the drive, she wouldn't go in the woods, she just reared and ran backwards... bogged off over the edge of cliffs... not the easy project I was hoping for. I haven't ever ridden anything like it. Increasing the pressure with tack or a helper with a lunge whip just escalated the problem. She didn't really care for other horses either - we could ride out with someone and if she decided she wasn't going any further, she would just nap and watch them walk out of sight o_O

There were so many bad days, I don't even know how I got through them, other than a deep sense of responsibility knowing I was her last chance, there was no way I could pass this pony onto anyone else in good conscience - someone would end up getting badly hurt. On the ground she was a complete angel, she would follow me around when I was poo picking and drag me over for a cuddle and who could deny the cuteness of THIS:

Shortly after the first christmas I decided I needed to have one big push and then if she wasn't improving by easter, I would take her on a one-way trip to the hunt kennels. I found a local freelance lady who had her own brand of natural horsemanship that was not gimmicky but very horse-centric and she came to help me a couple of times a week. Together we figured out how to get her feet unstuck when she napped and sure enough before easter she started to turn the corner. Whether it was just luck, or whether I had relaxed *myself* by picking that date, i will never know but it's definitely something I would do again.

When she could start hacking, we could ride round to a nearby arena and start doing some proper work! And then we started going out to some little shows and outings. This was our first party,a local funride

In the August we started going to some shows - on a ticket first and then I affiliated her straight away just to give her a guaranteed kind of show. We had some highs and some lows - she would score in the 50s and in the 70s on the same day

Not many pics as I'm always on my own but here she is having a couple of Kira moments in a random novice, March 2016
It's interesting watching old videos because I can see the strengths & weaknesses that have developed since - e.g. the canter is inclined to bounce croup high and that used to push her out of balance, but the activity that caused that really helped her with the changed as soon as she learnt to keep her bum *down* ;)

From that point on she has really blossomed :D

She's done area festivals and regionals at every level - not always done very well when we got there but just to qualify has felt like an achievement given where she started from.
2017 area festival at Mount Ballan, look at her stumpy legs amongst the big horses! This was the year we did Medium.

That same year we did our first advanced test and also got our photo in H&H ;) A tremendously proud moment, but also bittersweet because I was supposed to do my first advanced on Millie but she had just retired at that point :(

2018 continued in the same vein...
We've learnt to love music classes - I did a clinic with Equidance through the local RC and so we went to do the area qualifier and won :D this was not the floorplan that the music was designed for, as RC comps go up to Advanced Medium but the floorplan we had designed for us was PSG. So quickly cobbled something together for the show, and then read the rules and found that we were stuck with it as you're not supposed to change between qualifier and the championships, erghh.

The champs was great fun, Kira was her usual full of character self and we had to get led into the test arena because she was too busy standing on her back legs to go in  but she pulled her socks up for 10th place in the end... another comical stumpylegs video here, she looks like the kids pony tagging along in the lap of honour :p

2018 was a busy year because we also got picked to represent the Wales region at the BD senior home international... think I was one of the only people riding a native and we def should have got extra points for riding a native of my *region*

Here she is arena walking at Bishop Burton

This was the year that kept on giving, because in November we attended the BD Native Champs for the 3rd year running, and this time won the AM and PSG classes. I'm so excited for this year, because BD have changed the rules to allow previous winners to return and defend :p their title... I am hoping that will help to grow the competition at the top levels a bit.

We finished the year with our first Inter1 tests, we weren't quite ready but I had learnt from Millie to seize the moment sometimes and just have a go, rather than wait for perfection. First go we were a smidge off 60%, but the second go was a comfortable mid 60s score... what a top cob.

Some 2 tempis in training

So far, 2019 has not disappointed either.
We have moved yards and Kira has finally started to enjoy her hacking just a TINY bit.

We did a music class at the winter regionals this year and even won a frilly! First time ever!

We've trained a lot too and had a huge amount of fun. This weekend going to take part in the Masterclass at the Trailblazers champs was a massive highlight.. My trainer is a true advocate for amateur riders having success through good training, and he's never missed a beat in supporting Kira and I - other people would have told me I just had the wrong horse so it was pointless trying to go up the levels. That's not helpful when this is the horse you *have*! So it was lovely to be able to show some of her work to other amateurs and have people say afterwards how much they enjoyed it.

little clip here

very very tired afterwards

And that's our 5 year roundup. What a ride! I can't believe what this naughty little pink pony has turned into, and what we have done together. When Millie retired, I cried so long and so hard, as I never thought I'd have another horse like her. I probably won't do... but I have found another amazing partnership with my tufty footed welsh weirdo that is just as fabulous. I don't think we have one horse of a lifetime, I think if you're lucky there are more waiting to be found, it's just that sometimes they turn up in funny places. God, I just love the bones of her!

Thank you so much for posting this, I enjoyed reading it, looking at the photos and watching the videos so much. :D

What can be achieved through correct training, patience, perseverance and enjoying the pony/horse that you have can be so underrated. Well done, she's come on so far and is an absolute credit to you.

It must feel really satisfying to do so well with a pony that was so difficult at the start. Inter 1 is such an achievement as it is but I think it's even more impressive that you've done it with Kira.
Well done :)

Absolutely loved reading this and watching the videos, what an amazing partnership you have. I especially liked your comments about your supportive trainer and how they encourage you to go as far as possible with the horse you have rather than telling you that you can't do it. Welsh cobs are the best (I'm biased, but they definitely are). GO WELSHIES!

Happy owniversary! You and that funky pink welshie are amazing. You so deserve all the highs and experiences you've achieved together xx

How old is she now?

thanks everyone, :)
Well she certainly got lucky when she came to you - not many obese, untrained problem horses have such good outcomes!

Luck is in the eye of the.. um.. beholder ;) I think she probably didn't see it that way in the beginning (nor did I) but I certainly think I'm pretty lucky now.

totally agree, no point in wishing she was something she's not. She's really good at the stuff she likes doing so we just go with that.

it is, but most of all it's bonkers, I look at her and can't quite square the whole experience in my mind. It's ridiculous!

Life's too short to put up with bad training. I dip in and out with other trainers occasionally but I'm really happy to have someone that firstly believes in us, and also doesn't put a limit on what they think we can do just because she's short and furry.

How old is she now?

she's 14 this year :)

“The one you’ve got “ - you are right 😊 I’ve had quite a few over the years and picking the one would be like choosing your favourite child 😳

Thank you for a lovely and inspiring report 🙂

This is just beautiful MP

Look how far you have come! I am just about to take M out novice and I dream of getting as far as you have done :)

Congratulations on it all, inspirational to those others of us who are competing natives

aww thanks for your kind words everyone :) it's nice to look back especially because when the going gets tough it can feel like you aren't getting anywhere, but you are ;) I don't dare to have hopes for the next 5 years just because life has a way of doling out disappointments now and then, but I am so grateful to have her and have done all these fun things already :)

I absolutely love every word of this! Kira is such a credit to your hard work, patience and skill, and I'm sure you are both inspiring so many people, I wish I'd been at your Trailblazers demo. I'm also positive your fabulous trainer loves working with you both, I bet you are one of his favourite clients. Congratulations on an amazing five years, and heres to the next five, and your first GP x

I love seeing my beloved Welsh cobs doing well! I have had several outstanding ponies and have had to retire them early so know how you feel about millie. I had thought my new youngster was going to be the next one to be a great until my freak accident on her has laid me up big time. If you would like a full up section c to work your magic on let me know!

aw thanks daffy, I've got everything crossed that we will make it ;) got to aim high, right?

She looks amazing. You have done so well with her.
But
Question from a someone who can’t remember an Intro test.
How on earth did you get from a fun ride to Novice dressage in one go?

haha! well I did have to leave some steps out, the post was already too long :p it was Kira's first time but not mine, which helps.. we did a few prelims in between too, but in 2015 they didn't go on your record so I've just dug out the sheets to see. I didn't do very many because my previous competition experience from other horses means I can't qualify for anything at that level, and we almost had medium trot/canter so just decided to crack on with Novice at her 2nd show.

It always amazes me how you can have a horse come into your life and think you will be doing certain things with them and they turn out to be good at other things. Reading your posts has made me realize we type cast horses thinking they should be good at certain things or not as the case may be, then life throws a curve ball!

I see. Not knowing your background I thought that was an almighty leap from fun ride to Novice! 😀

I really enjoyed reading this, thank you.
It's incredible what you have done, and reading your posts about your achievements with Kira has gone a long way to sway me to the idea of a native rather than the easily breakable warmblood types I usually go for!

I'm not the least bit sentimental as a rule but I got teary reading this. What a journey you've been on, absolutely amazing and very inspiring.

I quite often find myself getting a bit teary when MP puts up her Kira reports - she’s one of my favourite H&H horses and I love seeing how far the little pink pony has come!

ahhh *sniff* that's so kind of you to say. She makes my heart burst so it's nice that other people like her too ;)
