Thanks for all the replies and advice to my previous post-my pony pulled a tyre today and did not react at all-over gravel, grass sand and through puddles. I shall be doing this for a while longer but can anyone tell me how long this needs to be done before 'putting to' I will be getting someone experienced to help me do this!

I'm purchasing a trap next-Ive been looking at the 2 wheel exercise carts and decided the robinsons one is no good for me or my pony-so looking elsewhere and have accepted the fact I will have to pay for a decent one!! I've seen this lovely rally cart from 1902 designed for his size, it has 44" wheels and is in perfect working order. Is it possible to have one as a first cart as preference over an exercise cart??

When we got Molly to drag the tyre round for the first time, she found it all VERY boring! So i sat in the tyre and she dragged me round!!

That was also boring (for her - i found it rather amusing!)! Did you hack him with the tyre or just school? We schooled, then hacked (unfornately we were too stupid to realise that the lunge lines we'd used to attatch the tyre would be rubbing on the road and they snapped just before we got home!

I think it all depends on the individual horses' attitude. Molly's very laid back, so it was all done withing a couple of weeks with her (not every day either). She's just not been bothered at all.

As for the trap, we went to out local market (Beeston) and asked a man who's there every week to make one for us. It was about £240 brand new, so not bad really. Lovely trap too! He also made the trap holder to attatch to our Ifor Williams trailer. That was about £70 i think. Comes in handy though!

If you live near Beeston, there's a carriage/driving sale on on the 24th of March, which looks very good! Get some bargains!

Have fun!

Hiya, I broke my pony to harness starting in November 2006. Now keep in mind my pony is VERY quiet and will put up with alot of new things. In November we simply long reined him with the harness on the roads, mostly practicing stoping and starting. Next we used to of us. One person had the reins to control him whilst the other had the tugs and leant back so he had some weight on the breast band, and learnt this didnt mean stop, without any distracting noises. Then we attached a cone full of loose stones, which was quite heavy and noisy. He dragged this about happily. In January 2007 the cart arrived and we attached it straight away but didnt ask him to move, simply put it on and took it off. The next day we put him to again and lead him with no-one in the cart up one of the quieter roads. He was very happy doing this so we put one person in the cart and one leading it. Again all went smoothly and we had two people in the cart with no leader by the end of the day. Good Luck

Oh, i forgot to say, Molly could already long-rein WAY before we thought about breaking her to harness.

And when we put the trap to her for the first time, we just put her in it but didnt attatch her. We moved it around her and pushed it into her. She didnt flinch. Next day we attatched it and walked her around the yard. Next time, one got in it and one walked at Molly's head. Then we went from there.

excellent thank you for the advice. my pony doesnt seem bothered so far at all-he was even trotting around with the tyre and didnt seem to react, I plan to spend atleast another week doing this and out on the road and as soon as I get a trap I will do what smirnoff_ice has done. Some people have said that all these bad things happen ie pony bolts and snmashes up the trap etc etc and I got panicked for a while but I think if im sensible it will be fine!!! fingers crossed!!!!!!!!!
