You know dressage isn't your "thing" when...

... people's comments after your test (Intro A, local riding club, of which I'm a committee member) include
"well done for staying on"
"you rode through it"
"you got to the end of the test"
"What a monkey (at times)" (from the rather benevolent judge!)
"at least you had a go"
"never mind, he was a bit cheeky"
"what a naughty boy!"

...says it all really, I think we'll stick to hacking!

Do not be disappointed. Your horse obviously hacks. If I took my dressage horse hacking, the comments would be exactly the same except for the addition of "didnt the ambulance get here quickly". Every horse has its forte!

Ah, stick with it! If it was the horse's first time at a dressage party next time will be better and calmer, and how proud will you feel when the marks and comments start improving?

Agree! I'm not too disappointed, we weren't eliminated and somehow managed 8th of 9! He spent many years as a riding school stalwart/plod, with hardly any hacking experience so was quite green in lots of ways. He will happily go out in company and I can take him around the farm tracks (no roads) on his own now. My daughter hacked to the venue with her friend (who was 2nd placed junior on her welsh D) but didn't want to compete. We did a fun show at the same venue a few weeks ago and he was 2nd in the handy pony, proving he can behave well when he wants to, :D

Don't give up! I took my boy to his first competition in June and the judge's comment was 'Cheeky monster!'. Two weeks ago we did our third competition, affiliated this time, and came away with two decent scores and two blue rosettes :)

Well done - it sounds like to just get out and about is an acievement in itself! I can't wait to hear about your achievements in the future :)

My best was "Rider has good glue!"

Horse was a cheeky monkey in BD Novice, leaped and launched....then the next test after a Looooooong second warm up was fab and got him 5 points!

I used to get 'sympathetically ridden on a difficult horse' when I had my arabX, she wasn't difficult at all, in fact she was accurate in all her transitions etc. but had typical arab head carriage. On my roan ISH I once got 'nice horse when not bucking' LOL

I had my first go at dressage a few months ago, my horse loves to school, i love hacking, im over 50 years old but thought it would be good for my horse, i did intro A, i was in the school doing my test when i pulled him up because i could not remember my test, i then had a little paddy on me and shouted " i knew this was a bad idea, i never doing this again, im sticking to hacking" and i left the area, never to do another test again, i hated it. { it was at my friends livery yard}

I got something similar the rare occasions I had a go 'well ridden on a pony that was difficult\not always listening' lol she also has a high head carriage. (I deduce with my extremely limited dressage knowledge that this is bad then? Lol)

A year ago Herbs and I were getting comments like that in walk trot tests. Afew weeks ago we came 4th with 68.25% in a prelim test.
As you say atleast you weren't eliminted. My old mare Lucy and I got eliminated at our first and only attempt at afilliated dressage. She went down the centerline got to x and stopped dead and refused to move. Till the judge rang the bell again to eliminate us then she walked on sweet as a lamb the cheeky little minx :P
