I had one on saturday!
I took the Destroyer to a little competition for the first time in nearly a year. We've not jumped a full course in a year and not jumped on grass in two years. I have a fear of jumping on grass that cannot be put into words - just think blind terror. I fell heavily 2 years ago on grass and the thought of it makes me want to barf. Thats why I chose the venue i did as they do a lovely little course inside in a nice little safe arena..
So imagine my joy when we turned up and said competition was outside.........on the green stuff.
After palpitaions and several trips to the loo later i summoned up the courage to go and warm up Hovis in the warm up ring - another major major terror of mine is warm up rings. I HATE them with a passion that is extreme. He was ok but snorting like a dragon. Fair dos he's not been out in ages so he was scared. I was pooing myself so we made a right pair.

Then hubby finally prised me out of the warm up ring on the nice surface into the grass arena. Where I proceeded to do a great demonstration of how to look like you've never ridden before in front of a ground full of people. Hovis got so strong he nearly pulled my arms out, jumped beautifully but wanted to do it in canter - i didn't.. His canter is so big and i was riding like such a plum we missed a couple of jumps and had to come back round to them. I rather suspect the children in the crowd learnt a lot of new words that day. My apologies to all that were there for my language but you try stopping the destroyer in full flow when you are tense with fear and wanting to throw up halfway round!
Anyway the good news was we got round, we only actually knocked one fence down (although our route to a few more is best described as unorthadox) and i didn't fall off.
The bad news is i think i need a LOT of practise.oh and i split the front of my jodphurs so showed the crowd glimpses of my black knickers. Classy...
Ever felt you'd be better off taking up knitting?

YES!!!!
After beeing bucked off on saturday and fracturing my ribs, i have decided that i can't ride, and have been fooling myself all these years into thinking that i can.
knitting sounds like a bl00dy good idea!!!!!!!!!!

Well done you for even going into the ring if you were that worried!! Sounds like plenty of positives too, so hang onto those :-)

I've a useful remedy for pre-ring entry nerves - plenty of gin!! Sadly, the horse doesn't like it as I think it would be much more useful to her than me.

When's the next outing then?!

Don't do knitting - I have an RSI in my wrist caused partly by marathon knitting sessions one Christmas when I was skint and decided everyone in my family needed new scarves... it's a dangerous sport!:D

Well that's well and truly put me off - riding is much safer! :)

OP - yes am going through a permanent state of wanting to take up a more sensible hobby at the moment. I thought this horse lark was supposed to be enjoyable... try telling my pony that!?!

Stinky did his first jumping on grass on Sunday, and saw a proper wall and a spread for the first time.

I was very relaxed, cool and enjoyed it - but I was watching and let Alice who is 15 and bounces well and has no fear take him round:D. Little chap flew the spread and didn't even look at the wall.

Maybe I should send her up to you to take out the Destroyer - she loves jumping Farra too, so is used to huge hairy beasts.

I am hoping to do the 2'3 in a few weeks when I am at max energy between chemo sessions, assuming my energy levels return - this time I have been tired far more than I was at the start.

Well done, and I would have loved to see you going round on him, plus to have a giggle at your knickers!

See, Im thinking like Slinky, thank god you were wearing some. Seriously, good on you for at least giving it a go, there is no way that I would ever jump, anything, anywhere, least of all in front of anyone else. Will be interesting to read Hovis' take on it on Friday:)

I actually suggested it today, my friend was here, and after the things that have gone wrong lately, and getting plonkered off my 3 yr old on friday, first time i sat on him, i thought knitting sounded really good, but she was having none of it. Like you, I love sj, but on my terms, not flying round like a lunatic, and what is it with old men at the entrance to the ring, slapping the horse on the ass as you go in, feel like telling them to f**k off. You did well to get round, which to me at the moment, is the object of the exercise!!! Wouldn't it be lovely to go in with a nice calm horse, that doesn't think, it's against the clock all the time!

Yess, knitting seemed a pretty good idea the other day - I had a potential client enquire about schooling livery, I was chatting to her whilst tacking up one of my horses, got all the kit on, dragged it out of the stable to the mounting block, put my foot in the stirrup, bounced of the block with my other foot.... and promptly landed on the floor under horse's belly together with the saddle...
My arse hurt, and I lost a client (I think).
How professional, how professional indeed:eek:

You know what? I think you did really well. You were put into a situation which you would normally have avoided at all costs - and you went ahead and did it. Many others would have bottled it. You didn't! And look at you now - you've come on here and told us about it, with a sense of humour too!

Well done you!! (and as you've done so well, I think you are definitely allowed to go and treat yourself to a lovely new pair of replacement jodhs!).

Well done for giving it a go. If i were you i'd buy myself something nice to celebrate the fact i overcame my fear :P rewards are always nice.
Do you canter the jumps at home or do you do everything in trot? Just wondering
