Well we had one today.
Off we went to the Equine Fair to exhibit Chocolate in the Stallion parade.
CCj plans her display, discusses with her Dad exactly how she wants the jumps etc, and I stand in the gallery camera in hand.
First disaster, no film in camera..(card)..it's in the other one.
Second disaster, Chocx who is so laid back it's not true, takes great exception to entering the arena..
Third disaster, he goes in but proceeds to be so behind the leg he would barely move..
I can see from C's expression she is thinking "What the hell do I do now?"
Normally you would wallop him one or two and make himn shoot forwards, but with several thousand people watching, you smile weakly and try and ride through it..
Fourth disaster, she comes round at the first part of a two foot double and the bugger stops!!!
At this point I cover my eyes, grateful the camera isn't working, and the commentator makes nice noises about the arena spooking a lot of the horses..
He then jumps, but no way his usual syle or grace, more a forced jump and looks horrible.
We discover her Dad has altered the distance she requested, plus the jump was supposed to be away from the wall, but hey ho, we have to repeat the whole damn thing tomorrow and hope it will go better..
He ended up clearing the fences but we felt really disappointed.
Then Terry Boon came in on Catherston Liberator and that didn't go well either, the stallion looked as worried as Chocolate did. He didn't attempt to jump it.
The person who had the worst deal however was the rider of a smart connemara, he bounced in, the music started, he did a huge buck and off she flew.....
I bet she is dreading tomorrow too!
I think the plan for tomorrow use the sharper spurs, move the jump away from the track, whizz him up a bit up the long side (all of 25 m.. and both should be more relaxed, as C was nervous too..
If you see a woman wearing a huge brown paper bag over her head when he does his demo, well that'll be me.. seriously it was incredibly intimidating, you can see why horses at the HOYS go ape in that atmosphere, it must be terrifying..
I met bonzabean however and her helper, and it was super to find she was as nice in the flesh as on here..
Choc is now back in his box no doubt wondering what all the fuss was about, and I could have cried later on when in Mary King's demo I heard her say, "Your horse MUST be off your leg"
We bl**dy know that, but sometimes it just doesn't go to plan.....

oh dear not the most ideal day. was told about the connie though, although it looked very hot on entering the buck came out of no where when she asked it to open its trot up, full marks to her for getting back on and finishing although friend said she was rather more restrained for what she asked for trot wise afterwards!!

Hope to be down tomorrow for most of day so if you need some help with jumps etc just say as me and Sarah are able bodied and willing, Caroline has my number! Will also come armed with camera

Oh no what a disaster- I do feel for you all !! What a shame!!He must have just frozen in the atmosphere I guess? I have experienced that before in big atmo comps- they just completly freeze and there is nothing you can do about it because it is like your horse has changed into some sort of half dead donkey !
Hope he is better tomorrow! Fingers crossed!!

Eeek poor CCJ and Chocx. Sounds terribly daunting and even the best have problems

Hopefully tomorrow he will be a complete pro, and CCJ will be less nervous

All experience i guess.

Well done tho, I dont think I would even enter the arena lol

If it's not an actual thrashing he needs I don't think there's any harm in giving him a quick reminder - as a spectator I wouldn't go off a stallion/his producers if it was given a timely reminder and then proceeded to go well. I take it if she was jumping she took a short whip? Maybe she should ride in with a schooling whip which can be used effectively in a more subtle manner, then if necessary swap it for a jumping one her dad carries in? Can you also report back in more detail what Liberator's like? Quite curious to learn more about Liberty's dad.

You know his usual standards so you know he was poor but it certainly wasn't a disaster. At the end of the day you are all in one piece and have tomorrow to improve. Just try and enjoy it.

Oh dear! It all sounds rather scary, im not surprised he got a little shy!!! Lets hope the bag on the head tomorrow does the trick

If Chocx is still scared he can come stand and hide behind you!!

I was there today too and saw the stallion parade, including the poor girl that got ditched from the connemara, and have to say even though Chocx obviously got a bit of stage fright his temperament shone through for me - clearly a lovely boy with a lovely attitude

Hi Sue, I posted in NL about today, just didn't give too much away! I saw CCJ, did she tell you? I left you a message on my post.xx
