Your horse is on box rest and you cant ride it!

I tended to only ride Chico 3 maybe 4 times a week and often not for very long is schooling so when he had his operation and would be on box rest I didnt think i would miss riding that much, but OMG i do!

I had Easter off work with not alot to do and the number of times I just wanted to saddle up and have a pootle about then remembered I couldnt, really surprised me.

Lady at yard has offered for me to ride her mare but them her mare was under the weather so I didnt want to ride her until she was better. Although it's not the same as riding your own.

I really really miss riding Chico, any one else in the same position with theirs?
 
Weirdly, when the boy was on box rest last year, I was desperate to ride. Now I can ride, I'm not so bothered. Contrary, human nature? Dunno, it's bizarre!
 
It's horrible isn't it! My horse recently had a week off work and the whole time I was itching to get back on him, somehow being told that I couldn't ride him made me want to ride him a whole lot more!

How long is Chico on boxrest for?
 
Yep was in same boat. Then to make it even more fun just as my girl was ment to come back into work i had to go in for a op on my back...mind you both back into work now, makes it more fun as we are both taken it nice and slow. How is Chico?
 
Both of mine are on box rest my mares been off for 5 months and the pony for 2 and it's killing me! Been riding my instructors show jumpers and I've lost so much muscle and am aching after riding only once a week, can't wait to ride again :-(
 
I've got the opposite problem, i broken my ankle on friday and I wake up look out the window and there are my eventers staring at me! I feel like I'm just watching their fitness disappear :-(

Ouchy, me too only it's my wrist and not being able to drive I've only seen my boy twice in the last four weeks. Once to return to the scene of the crime to pick up my car and the other when the vet came out to see if he could shed any light on why we'd both ended up on the floor :cool:

For the first time in my life I'd put a horse on part livery - lucky really that i didn't choose a DIY yard as now they're having to exercise him too, no chance of me doing that for a while and I wouldn't like to think what he would be like after a couple of months or more off :(
 
When you have been ejected with force from another pony and can hardly walk without painkillers and you dose up and get on your own and he is really good and lets you have a gentle schooling session :D.
 
Mine has been off for over two months now and at the moment there is no end in sight :( she has been diagnosed with an autoimmune disorder and will be lucky if we get to a point where she is manageable let alone thinking about riding again :( never thought i would miss it this much thats not even to mention the very real possibility/probability that im gonna lose her :(
 
I'm back at hospital tomorrow hopefully for a full diagnosis. Hospital sent me home friday with a ' sprain' by monday- aggony, went back and they checked xrays and found I have torn the ligament from the ankle but took a small chunk of bone with it. When I asked if it was a full tear or partial they replied.....dont know :( cant really blame them there is a lot of swelling. Fingers crossed I will know how long my box rest is for tomorrow :)
 
Likewise - Happyhacker, I hope there is a positive outcome, how awful :(

OP - I know your pain, can you take yours out inhand? or is it strict box rest? I take my girl out inhand as she cannot be ridden anymore, its kind of painful in a way but at least I am out with her still. Fingers crossed for you that the box rest will be over soon. At least the weather hasn't been great! riding in the rain is not the same!
 
yep my boy has been off work for 4 weeks now and im going mad not being able to ride, im on the verge of booking a lesson on one of the riding school horses just so i can ride.
 
It's the other way round for me. I've been out of action 6 months. Have managed a couple of 5 min rides in that time to see how i'd cope and it hasn't been great. I did very much enjoy two laps of the school Tuesday before i had to get off though, you appreciate the little things i think! :(

Glad i'm not the only one. And i agree that when you know you cant ride you want to but when you can you just cant be bothered!

Chico has another 3 weeks of complete box rest left, then he goes out into a very small turnout area but not sure when i can start riding him again - just have to wait and see.

He is doing so well though that i am hopeful i can be back on board sooner than would be expected. Will only be quiet walking to begin with but I am happy to take anything!
 
when you've had health issues and doctor says not to ride for a month, and your 3 lovely horses (who live at home) are looknig at you wondering why they're on holiday!

then you get back on and your trusty horse after a month off is as good as gold to hack out (no school to use!). :)
 
My trusty steed was out of action for 3 months, December 2011-March 2012.
I used to have those "I cant be bothered" days and when I couldn't ride I really missed it and was about to go insane!! Although I had the awful news of possibly a light happy hacker at most once back into minimal work.

Luckily for me (how ever you want to look at it) my horse hated the time off as much as I did and ended up coming back into full work 3 weeks ago with the go ahead from the vet! We have both lost a lot of muscle and not quite at the level we were but she is sound and we are both enjoying it! :D
I really do appreciate my neddy now and even when I have one of those "cant be bothered" days I make sure I ride anyway and really do enjoy it when I do :)
 
Yes I am, Ebony is on box rest week five now and its driving me mad, even more so when I see the others who just do not bother and I really want to hope you will be able to soon and that Chico gets better soon.
 
Snap! Box rest since 7 March, vet out again 14 May (has been out since). Horse has been a plonker in the field and done his front left suspensory ligament. He's bored, I'm bored *sigh*
He was on box rest for 3 and a half months last summer too after being caught in a cut barb wire fence twice, seems I'll never have a full summer of riding *sigh*
