I have recently bought a 2 year old (passport says 3 in jan but I'm not convinced)

He is very weedy in his chest and shoulder, but has a nice back end and plenty of bone.

My question is, how long in your experience do cob types take to fill out ?

Mine wasn't fully filled out and full grown until 7. They are very weedy so possibly the age is accurate to a certain extent. Mine grew from 14.2 to 15.1 between 4.5 and 7 years. I know her age was accurate ,as knew the breeder and also had date stamped photos from them she was born

He could quite feasibly be rising 3. He is a good weight and the heavier types do take much longer to mature. In a years time he will look completely different again and look more even but as amymay said they can take upto 6 ish to fully mature

I bought my cob from video at age 3 (either he was a very late - Sept/Oct foal, or he was actually 2, I wasn't bothered to be honest).
I too thought he'd be too small - he was barely 148.5cm when he arrived in Sept 2016.
He is now officially 157cm & looks bigger, he grew over 4cm from Jan 2019 to Jan 2020!

That's encouraging to know. I'm pretty impatient I guess lol

He looks exactly how I'd expect a rising 3 year old to look. Just watch his weight, he's a pretty hefty chap and will already be putting strain on his limbs if you're not careful

I bought my mare when she was 4, and looking back she was quite weak and weedy looking. She is now 7, and has really filled out in her shoulder and neck. I think she has some more to grow too, so I would say they keep going until about 7/8

Can I ask when you broke her?

I bought her in the July, and she had been started the Sept before by the breeder. I went right back to basics though, and built up really slowly. I bought her from a dealer who had been taking it super slow too.....

So about 4 and a half when you started her? I'm thinking to back him this time next year then throw him away for the winter and start again in the spring 2022

Mine was broken in at 5 (on paper) however his 4yo teeth came through when he returned from breaking so I think he was actually 4 then (so a year younger than on his passport)

I think I'm going to just judge it on his body maturity. Hes a complete saint, nothing phases him so hes brain is in the right place at least!

Mine too, every step I hacked I had to do on my own as no one to walk with me or ride with me, we have been around Somerford Park twice now, he is golden!

My other half is allergic so I think I'll be going it alone too!! I've heard somerford is really good for showing them new things. I love getting my horses in the water so I'll definitely be getting there at some point

Expect him to keep filling out until at least seven.

I bought mine as a 5/6yo, and over the next year she went from a MW saddle to an XXXW. Sadly, she didn't get any taller.

Yes about that. She is so generous and calm it would have been easy to push her, so I made myself slow down even more and made sure I gave her tons of praise for everything. I took her out lots and just made everything super low key and rewarding for her.

Have known one go on growing till 8, up in height as well as width. Sometimes they may grow on later if less nutrition in their early years. Yes 1 Jan on passport means it was a guess because they didn't know. Get dentist to give you opinion, and anyone else you know who's good on teeth, sometime worth getting a few opinions as they can vary. Will probably be the most accurate way to judge his age. The cobs do fill out a LOT.
Agree with Erin - he looks to me more like 2 and a bit rather than rising 3. But what a cutie!!
