So today Faran had his first negative dog experience.
We are building up to solo hacking. So we are long lining out then I’m hopping on and hacking back. Today was the first time I’d hopped on alone.
Anyway before I could even get on I came round a corner in the local forest and from the bottom of a very long hill I saw two GRs at the top of the hill and not an owner in sight. I stopped Faran and was waiting to see if any owners appeared. Just as we did that one of them spotted us, the puppy it turned out. Of course it immediately, just as the owners, a man and a woman, came over the brow of the hill, started running down barking. Faran wasn’t too fussed at this point and I’d come to his head and was standing. The woman was shouting and shouting and the dogs weren’t really doing what they were asked. She did have a chance to grab the older dog but didn’t. Then the older one joined in in the advance and both started barking and running towards us. I didn’t want them getting behind him.
I swished my whip at them as they came closer, the puppy stopped but the older one didn’t and that’s when a Faran spooked and pulled me backwards. The woman was screaming that he’s just a puppy. I said that my horse was only four and he could have killed your dogs.
The man then shouted to me that I had no business being in the forest I told him I had every right to be there and that their dogs should have been under control. I also told them their dogs were in camera running at me. They high tailed it away quick as you like.
I just don’t get the entitlement to tell me where I can ride when my horse was under control when their dogs weren’t. It’s a public space not a dog park and if you don’t have recall then I don’t believe your dog should be off leach in a public place.
Im glad I had my helmet cam on, I’ve only recently started wearing it again. I was so proud of Faran as other then the big spook and pulling me backwards he was calm not long after whilst I sort out out the lines I’d had to drop when I went to his head.
