I was right to worry most of the other competitors were on very grand looking horses and alot were stallions. It was a strange class it was split into two groups you led your horse around then you were called in individually to have confirmation checked and run up in trot. In our group the judge missed out two horses and the owners had to point out that their horses had not been looked at and the judge didn't seem to check confirmation for long. One horse dished like mad and got great marks another had really swollen[filled] back legs
Then you had to do a freestyle test it was not judged as normal as some horses that were disobedient got good submission marks it was very strange but it was nice to see such lovely horses [I never see them at dressage competitions like that ]
Well I was pleased with my chap he did an accurate and correct test as he always does, but it was not what they were looking for at all today ,he gets great marks in aff. dressage 76.5% being his best but he is not flashy. It will be interesting to see how these horses progress.

But as I said alot were beautiful and it was lovely to see them

Well we took our stallion to the 5yo class at towerlands. The judge said he didnt have confidence and she didnt like the fact our rider did sitting trot. He came 4th.

Week earlier he got 75%& 76% in two novice tests? And after the 5yo class won another novice class with 70% again!!!!!

Young horse classes are weird!

Well done. have you qualified for the winter champs as I live near and it will be fun looking out for others. We have qualified for spillers and doing riding club team there as well.Only regestered November so not qualified for pure dressage but qualified summer regionals in prelim and novice with only three outings, so he can't be that bad.

Was this the same as Spillers Young Horse etc... My friend did this and qualified but the Pavo Young Horse the Judge did not like her horse! She gets over 70% normally in Novice Open so hopefully this gives you some idea of the judging!! Well done anyway for giving it a go and I am sure you will do well at the Summers... I said I would not do dressage and stick to jumping because of the fact that if you cock up in jumping you know you made a mistake whereas dressage does depend on the Judge or Judges, right or wrong but dont be put off... on one day I got a score of over 70% and then a score of 62% both novice classes...horse rode the same... went the same.. different judges ...... thats Dressage for you!!

No ,spillers is the comb. training at the championships so as you see we usually jump , but he has been getting brilliant marks so gave it a try but it was a whole different level and just didn't understand the marking it must just be on paces and have to admit some had fantastic ones but others were strange and definately not straight and I wondered if they would be up to more advanced work which will really put a strain on their hind legs.
Having a go at the music qual. at the weekend hope that goes better

Sorry I meant Shearwater not Spillers!!

There is also Rhinegold YH, and Pavo .. you should try them also.. maybe go to one of these and see what they are looking for? One in Cheshire in May time I think and Kingswood End of April?

Thanks you are very supportive but I think I'll stick to the comp. I understand.
I'm not complaining about my result ,I was pleased with my chap, and I know we will have fun this year as he is a great allrounder and 110% safe and reliable

from the sounds of it the judges might have been judging the handler and not the horse in a few cases ;-)

you sound a lot like me - s*d the result - as long as YOU are pleased with what your horse has done and you know he's done his best or even better than his previous best.

well done

I had a similar thing at a mare grading - my young mare behaved impeccably (and had never been away from home before in her life) and yet got a 6 for temperament (she really did NOTHING wrong - stood, was handled by both judges, looseschooled, trotted up - all with a smile on her face - didn't fidget) - yet another mare got a 10 for temperament (and did fidget and pull faces) - it turned out they awarded the temp. marks based not on the performance on the day but on the competition record of the mare (so as my mare had no comp. record she got a low mark and as the other mare had done national teams she got a high mark - to those judges it was - and I quote one " if the mare has got a good competition record she must have a good temp." (now I've seen some very competent competition horses that have sh1t temps and are almost at the point of needing a 'hazard warning' sign on their stables)

ho hum - gradings and this sort of competition - the judges seem to have preconceived ideas of the result before the horses come into the ring.

ok, just for the record though I found this!!!! THE BADMINTON YOUNG DRESSAGE HORSE OF THE FUTURE 2005

The class is open to horses born in 2000 – 2001
(4 and 5 year olds)
Prize Money 1st - £12, 2nd - £8, 3rd - £6
Rosettes to 6th place

The first four horses in each qualifier will be eligible for the Championship at Badminton. The highest placed 4 year old in each round will also qualify. The Championships are at Badminton Park on 21 & 22 July 2005.

For your information below is a summary of how the class is run.

1. The horse will first be presented to the judge in hand to assess conformation and suitability and will be required to trot up in hand.

2. Then each horse will be asked to come into the arena and go through a freestyle test. The dressage test is to be made up by the rider and must start and finish with a salute. The test should not be more than three minutes long and should consist of a walk on a long rein, trot and canter on both reins and a few lengthened strides in trot on both reins.

3. Finally the top ten horses will be required to show their paces and star appeal.

How the class is judged:

The judge is looking for potential for the future. Very often the horse may not be the one presented in the best way. The Judge is looking for an athletic, loose moving horse with a promising technique which, with the correct training will develop into a future dressage horse.

The horse’s confirmation and movement should enable it to withstand the demands of the sport in terms of soundness and stamina. Lack of quality and other defects that may prevent the horse moving well enough will be penalised even though the horse may make a nice eventer or show jumper. A lack of size however will not be held against it. Equally prejudices against mares should not affect judgements – it is essential to encourage riders to give mares a chance to establish better breeding policies.

In the dressage phase, unlike a dressage test, the judge is not assessing the level of training and no marks are given for individual movements. The judge may stand anywhere in the arena to get the best view. Three correct elastic and regular gaits through a swinging back are what the judge wants to see. They will have to weigh up the influence of the rider. A good rider may present a well-balanced smooth test from perhaps a moderate unscopey horse, while a novice rider may hinder a good horse showing its true worth. It is the horse’s potential and not the riders that the judge wants to see.

I did not know what the Judges were looking for either (I have a 7 year old so not applicable to me BUT) I was curious, I am like that... need to know thing!!!

I think you've just answered the question. Carthorse says her horse is a great allrounder - whereas what you've found above implies that pure dressage (and not something that will make a good SJ/eventer) is what they are looking for

Nice to see that in theory they will take into account the pro/am variance in rider production (but in practice it would be hard not to be influenced)

i was going to be entering Archie in the shearwater national 6yos and made the decision not too, imo its not that important, and for me qualifying for the regionals/nationals with him is far more important. I also agree that ive watched a couple of young horse clases and the judging can be a bit odd to say the least.

Hi, I saw yours at Solihull yesterday (the one in the bottom left photo isnt it?) I was warming up for the prelim while you were.
Its so nice to see others on non warm bloods! (And yours obviously holds its own against them!). I was on a big dark bay ID x TB- thinking oh sh1t- everyone is on overfed WBs which are very flashy!! (think top hats and white mane bands goes too far tho!!)

Glad you were pleased with yours. Mine was a monkey as not been out for 3 months and thought he was going XC as soon as we wnt into the outdoor! he was awful- worst hes ever gone- EVER! Had to laugh tho!

Best of luck with yours- as I said- lovely to see your non WB types going so nicely!

Yes there were quite a few top hats.He is a dutch warmblood but he doesn't really look it,I know, and he is feeling a bit down because he has a bit of mud fever which I have been battling with since before xmas. We have tried everything and had 4 courses of antibiotics nearly every lotion and potion and tried stabling 24/7 [which he hates]
There were some lovely horses there and boy, were they flashy but we were pleased with him he is the kindest and quietest chap and always tries his best

mud fever

don't brush their legs below the knee and hock at all, ever, during the winter

cold hose and leave

if you brush, towel off or anything else then you introduce microscratches into the skin surface which allows the bacteria in to cause the MF. By not brushing you also leave the natural grease in the coat to act as a water repellent

also leave the feathers ON to stop the water dripping into the heels

I didn't believe this - having ahd a horse with mud fever in lots of places for years - but an old racing 'lad' taught me this and not one of my horses has had mf for 20 years now by following this regime

Thanks but now he has it I am struggling and he is sore.He has a dressage to music tomorrow then he is going to have to go back out in the day.I've got some equine america fungitol arriving Monday [latest recommendation] He is just so unhappy in by himself and has dug a hole in his stable mat. I have tried washing off mud then drying with towel and putting various creams and oils on/stabling and not washing but still putting on lotions and potions. He has cracked heel in front now rather than the mud fever he had behind but I just can't clear it up

I was there on Raubritter, and although his conformation isn't what the judges are looking for (BIG POWERFULL STOCKY) he did well, coming fourth, just out of qualification.

I am a relatively unknown rider, but still beat Roland Tong on one of his horses!

Whats wrong with warmblood and white tape!!

bbmat well done you
cool.gif
.... which horse were you riding?? R U going to Solihull Nationals?

Not going, but qualified for summer regionals already. I was on MFSS RAUBRITTER x

The white tape is great for framing their necks and showing what a good outline the horse is in. I think it looks very nice and is well worth doing x

I remember, it was lovely to hear some positive feedback! Thank you! I was very pleased as another rider took him last year and their personalities clashed so much, he only got a 5 for his star quality mark, he got a 9 this time!!
grin.gif

I think that if we didnt have a buck in the canter, which lost him a submission mark, he would have qualified, we are going to try again at the hand!

Oh what a shame. I am trying to find out who is going from the forum so I can meet them in person!
smile.gif

Which regional will you be going to, I am going to the College in Beds for the Novice Restricted as luckily I too have qualified.. takes the pressure off for that... for a while!!!
tongue.gif

Well I have a huge roll of white tape and it was expensive too so I am going to use it plus it hides the mane that sticks out!
