Hi

My gelding who is about a year and a half old has been displaying threatening behavior towards some of the ladies at my yard. He’s been doing it for a while I’ve noticed as he’s been putting his ears back and threatened to bite/kick and each time it’s been against females. I’m a male and I’ve had him since he was about 3 months old, he was gelded last June and he’s been kept with a mare before however he was fine, it’s been happening for about 2 months and I’m completely perplexed to what could be causing this behavior and I’m getting quite concerned, so if anyone has an idea that would really help.

Many thanks

I'm struggling with your timeline, was he born in November? Maybe you're in the other half of the world.

Are you sure both testicles were present and removed? If this continues and is only women and not men, then I might blood test for male hormones.

Does he show other 'testosterone behaviour' such as trying to mount mares, or being possessive with mares or trying to herd them?

What are the circumstances when he shows the threatening behaviour? - Did you see it yourself, where was he, was there feed nearby , did the person he threatened have their horse with them?

I had one in England who was born in November. He looked like a happy accident type of horse, bought for work, who was an outsize Irish X Cob type. Called Harry Hoover LOL.

OP, you haven't answered but I would really go with wondering what they are doing to your horse. It is really easy to set up a camera nowadays, to put your mind at rest. It would need to be just inside your own stable and it would be for your private viewing of your private horse to see him, as videoing other people is legally not on - especially if it is to catch them out.

We had a rogue groom at work who was caught on camera. Awful to see someone abuse the horses. She denied it was cruel, despite horrific footage. It did at least cause her to leave as the alternative was prosecution, although I would rather they had done that too. Especially when she told everyone else she had left of her own volition as we treated the horses badly. Delusional. She almost kicked the back legs of a horse clean from under him yet, day to day, looked like a functioning member of society. The silliest thing was that she was aware of the cameras as the whole place was set up with security cameras, yet no one ever looked at them as we all had actual jobs to do and nothing was ever stolen. Familiarity breeds contempt.

Blood testing for male hormones is also a good shout.
