Young horse shopping in ireland....

Sadly due to my boys injury im beginning to put the feelers out to look for another to event.

I dont have a huge budget at all and what im after seems to sell for 3-5k over here which i simply cant afford. So i am thinking of heading over to ireland to try and find a diamond in the rough!

Any thoughts of what to avoid/not avoid? I would love to head to goresbridge but i cant get the time off work this week so wont be able to head out until end of sept time, are there anymore sales on later? Any dealers to go to/not go to?

I do have a friend out there who is more than happy to trapse around ireland with me horse shopping so i wont be completely alone and she knows how the irish work, she buys alot of unbroken TBs for herself to bring on

All im after is:

Gelding (dont do mares!!)
Not a bay! (Dont seem to have much luck with those! Although i will budge on this!)
Would prefer something backed not unbroken but more than happy with green
4yr old +
Something with some bone, breeding im not bothered about an irish bog pony will do but absolutely NO TBS!! (Had a bad experience re race injury with previous one..... Would love to avoid yet more heartache if possible!)
Something honest, with a willing attitude that is sound and likely to stay sound!! with a decent jump on it!

Looking to get to novice level eventing eventually but no huge rush.

Reckon i could find that in ireland for under £2K??
 
Have a chestnut geldine for sale 4 years old 17hh unbacked but has been bitted. may be a little more. With in the price you are looking at. Also were I am have a number of other horses for sale. Please PM for more details. I am on box rest at the moment but do have someone who can show them to you. Based near to Bourne Lincolnshire

I've bought several there, but always unbroken. Be very careful about anything that's been loose jumped for sales, as that can really mess their backs up. Also I'd steer clear of anything that's been hunted a lot. There have been threads on here about irish well hunted 5 yr olds that are written off with arthritis. I prefer to buy from the breeder, then I know full background. I think Cavan could be a happy hunting ground, I know a british dealer who buys regularly there. I've always found something on Donedeal, and bought it sight unseen, although get photos and a video to see first. All my youngsters have turned out to be lovely, all under £1,000, but there are other expenses like vetting and transport over which will cost you around £300. Good luck!

Im being nosey on done deals atm!! i dont particularly want something thats hunted either! im probably trying to find a needle in a haystack but heyho!! tbh thats the reason my budget isnt huge, i need to rest of it for vettings etc, current horse has tendon issues so will deffo be having the next pony vetted just in case it throws something up, not that it helps much as current lad passed a 5 stage vet anyway and then proceeded to do a tendon within 6 months!
 
I got a cracking 3 year old. Fantastic breeding (connie x tb) beautiful movement & confirmation, unbroken but literally for a fraction of the cost she would have been over here! Don't think the breeder i got her from has anything for you though other than a fantastic weanling which i have my eye on but don't want 1 that young!
Definitely will buy there again, always keep an eye out but really want to go to goresbridge for the experience as well :)

My budget is about double yours though- they are cheaper over there and the exchange rate helps but the locals do know their worth which is why a lot have been advertising in England and offering to arrange vettings/transport etc.

Vetting (3 yrs ago) was 200 euros including X-rays of back legs. Transport was 300 euros (I think).

Will happily send across the bays!!! :) im hoping i can increase my budget slightly with help from either my mum or a bonus i am due in from work! Im not in a huge rush im just a tad bored of having nothing to ride atm so my eyes are drawn towards horse searching websites!! the prospect of a trip to ireland is exiciting me slightly!!
 
Have a look at Kevin Reillys Facebook page, he mainly has purebred connies but he has one for sale at the moment which is connie x ID (Leo). He is a lovely horse and I know his full sister who is very smart. You'd be paying a lot more money over here for a horse of that quality!
 
Friend of mine has a home bred for sale in Shropshire for within your budget. Very talented jump, lovely paces, nice person, good conformation, ISH breeding. He is bay, but he is 5, broken last year and ready to get back on and do stuff. His 7 yr old half brother (same mare) is established at Novice, and going Int next season.

Failing that, I can give you a couple of phone numbers for people in Ireland who might have something to suit.

Everything else?? Haha i only want one!!! I am considering a road trip but for now theres nothing ive seen thats making me wana go all that way, in fact theres nothing in UK thats made me want to go view it! I didnt think i had high expectations but viewing the first one is always hard, especially in my circumstances as i feel i will forever be judging them against my injured one 😕 damn horses!!
 
Mine is an ISH with potential for novice eventing. He is from Ireland even though I got him over here. He's out of loughehoe guy, who stands at the watervalley stud. They have a FB page and can tell you what Irish dealers have their horses as they are sold on to pretty much the same people as youngsters.
A lady on here just recently went to the gorebridge sales and bought his younger brother. Will be green but huge potential and good temperament, watch for stomach ulcers though, not that it's the end of the world but mine had them and been treated and managed and he's a star. Training is really coming on now 😃 x
