just before my five year old was ridden this evening, i had a feel down his legs and thought one was a little puffy at the top between the tendon and cannon bone. He wasn't lame and there was no pain or heat- you couldn't see the swelling so we did some walk, trot and lateral work with him, nothing too strenuous. He was very good and i checked his legs again after some walking and i thought the swelling had gone. just fed him and it seems puffier than before he was ridden, still no pain or heat but i am a little intrigued. He was backed this summer and we ride him in a sand area in the field. it's fairly level but does have a very minor slope. he gets lunged too and we lunged twice quite hard last week (as he was being very naughty) and was hacked out twice on roads over the weekend (about 1.5-2miles each day) predominantly walk on both days. any ideas? should he have a few days over althought it seems to cause him no pain and improves when ridden? any ideas why it could be? He is quite close in front but there's no sign he has struck himself. Also, he lives out 24/7.

I'm not sure but I would cold hose it for 20 mins and then again in the morning and see what happens. If there is any heat or further swelling then I'd get our best friend, the vet out to have a look

sorry not much use

Thanks for the post...not really sure what to do, had something similar with my other horse a few years ago, had no idea what was up with her trotted her up, poked her leg, dashed around the field, called the vet, explained the situation, he came out, asked what i had done, made me do it all over again and then announced he had no idea and promptly gave me some random antibiotics just in case and charged me £100 for the priviledge! it's a tricky, just wondered if anyone had any experience? other thing that has just come into my head, he's been having a bit of oil in his tea for a week or two- could this be causing it?
