:( our 3year old new forest gelding has started to play up while led to and from his field.he has to be brought in at night during winter(yard rules) we have had him for a month & he was fine at first. he butts us a lot & has started to try& break away from us I have a kemp collar attachment on his head collar. He just has hay at night & a few carrots or apple occasinally for a treat. I am firm with him but this behavior seems to be escalating & i'm worried because if he gets away from us ther is a busy road at the bottom of the track, which could be really dangerous any advice or tips gratefully received, thnx

use a lunge line instaed of lead rope so you can get out the way of any naughtiness if needed but still have a hold of him. has he ever had a chifney on before? Maybe its something you can introduce.

Agree with Rowenna about the lunge line- give more flexibility and gives you more chance to keep hold.

Has he been bitted? If so, you could try leading him in a bridle (make sure you use a proper attachment for leading OR thread the lead rope/lunge line through both rings so if he does try to tank off the bit isn't ripped through his mouth.

We have a highland youngster who can get a bit giddy going out to the field the couple of occasions we have had to keep him in. Our boy is always led in a pressure halter - his breeder trained him to walk in one because she feels this native babies are just too strong for an ordinary headcollar. After trying to lead him in one I agree with her! It might be worth a go?

Once again agree with the lunge line, if he is bitted try leading in a bit or if he is REALLY strong then the fail safe chifney does work wonders, but I would use a chifney as a last resort, first off though I'd try a pressure halter, the 'be nice' halters are really quite good, and helped alot with a horse I had issues loading.
