My grandpa is getting a young puppy (cocker/springer cross called Jack!!!) and I was wondering what sort of lead/collar/halter to use? I have never trained a puppy and grandpa says he has always used collars, but with all these new-fangled halters on the market, I was wondering what would be the best for a very immature young puppy? He is arriving as soon as he is old enough to leave his mum.
 
Your grandpa must have some energy...for such an energetic breed

U could try a half check chain which are much more gentle for puppies...I personally hate haltis/harnesses....but is whatever u find most effective for your ability.
 
I too hate haltis/harnesses HOWEVER would recommend the Canny Collar to help stop pulling... saying that if the pup is trained properly from a young age using a regular/half check collar the canny should not be needed.. however some dogs just can't help pulling when something exciting is infront of them (cue 9.5stone ridgeback!! LOL)
 
OH thankyou - we are going to Jollys (our local BIG pet shop) tomorrow to speak to them and buy one (Grandpa is a Londoner at heart, so his common sense with animals is limited (although he makes up for it with his amazing mathetmatics and business skills)

Thankfully the people at Jollys know us quite well, as he used to bring his labrador in there all the time - and she was a favourite with the staff!
 
Sorry, folks, but half-checks are USELESS with my two year old Springer! Almost-year old retriever pulls on her half-check, too (but only with me, not daughter!)! Attend dog training regularly, and they accept that some dogs (ie, my Springer!) don't respond and need to be treated differently (which means I'm toughening up and taking her to gun dog classes instead!). Spent £20 on a rope-type harness at Badminton designed for hard pullers - useless! Only way to vaguely stop her pulling is by usuing a Halti. On a lighter note.........I was holding our three dogs outside the loos at Burgley on Saturday, waiting for Darling Daughter to emerge, and the beautifully behaved Golen Retriever (OF COURSE my daughter's dog!!!!) was, at this point, wearing her car harness which is black with a couple of flourescent yellow straps on it. One young girl in the queue whispered to her friend. "Is that lady blind?".........Thing is, we've always called her car harness for "guide dog outfit"!

By the way, isn't a Springer x Cocker now called a "Sprocker"? Good luck - you may need it! (But I love my mad Springer, Molly, SO much!)
