Young stock livery in or around Hertfordshire

Hi I'm thinking of buying a foal next year and will need to keep it at a stud or young stock livery yard as my yard won't take horses under 3. Does anyone know if any good places in or near Hertfordshire and how much on average it costs per month. Thanks
 
I've got young stock grazing on Essex/ Herts borders. Small single sex herds. I charge £30 a week. I don't offer livery per se but have helped out others who are stuck as this area has a shortage of grazing and no one specifically who does youngsters! On another post you mentioned buying from Woodlander, if you buy a foal from a stud like that, you will find many will offer livery and top class care. I had quotes for mine ranging from £7 per day to £15 per day depending on area but it was prohibitively expensive for me with several to keep.
 
Hi thanks for the reply elliefiz. Yes I suspect woodlander do offer livery but certainly don't want to be paying £15 a day! Would you consider livery for a yearly, possibly late next year?
 
I would have on look Facebook. I have my own yard but even I have trouble finding the right match. Whilst you do not want to pay £15 a day you do want someone who will make sure its wormed and sees the farrier every eight weeks, if not to be trimmed just to be handled. I would budget as much as you pay for normal livery plus factor in the cost of gelding.
I would try one of the M&M pony breeders as they are used to youngstock but not used to charging huge prices. The Welsh breeders would be a place to start.

Can I just ask why are you buying a foal as opposed to a yearling or 2yo , I never can work out why they more often than not cost more( buyers get carried away as they look cute) than an older one and the risk are higher. Can never see the logic. There is a lot that can go wrong and if you are going to put it at livery you are just adding to the expense.Are you experienced enough to asses a foal as they are notoriously difficult and even experience people make expensive mistakes. Sorry to sound negative but I breed horses and can never see the logic. Between me and you the top studs will not sell their best foals !
 
Hi pops dosh, fair question. The stallion I am interested in is only rising 4 and I saw him at woodlander stud this year and for a 3 year old his temperament was second to none along with being a stunning looking horse. I bought a 2 year old a few years back so am not looking to buy a foal for the cute factor! If there were 2 year olds for sale by this Stallion then I would be buying it. I also enjoy doing the young stock showing classes as well as the futurity. My 5 year old who I bought at 20 months I really enjoyed bringing on and getting an amazing bond with her, and having a youngster I know the history of the horse.
