My three year old is now away to be backed and can't believe how awful I felt leaving him there! I have kept reading on here all the nightmare stories about backing which have worried me but I did my research before and am very happy with the chap/place that I have chosen. However, despite that I really was very unsettled the first few days he was away.

Popped over to see him last night and he has settled in very well and lessons are well underway!

How often to folks check on their youngsters that are away at school?

Depends on how well you know the person doing the job and how much trust you put into her. Because I knew of my backer and her reputation and had got to know her beforehand with lessons on another of my Coblets, when I handed my mare to her I told her I would not be coming over until or unless I was needed. I know have an absolutely superb 5 year old welsh section d who is sane sensible and not afraid of anything.

If I have ever sent a youngster away for backing it was to a good friend of mine, so I wouldn't visit until they were ready for me to have a sit on them.

Okay thanks. Was working on once a week unless I felt needed to be more often.

I keep hearing good stories from all fronts about him and from what I have seen so far, does exactly what he said he would do. If I had any doubt or didn't feel that I could trust him, I would not have used him. Also have been told that can visit anytime and doesn't mind me watching him work with the youngster.

With the first horse I had backed I was banned for a week and than after went most days. The second one the same and I timed it with going on holiday. My homebred apart from the first day I went nearly every day but I was the backer the trainer provided her on the ground skills. If he is for you to ride the more you are involved the better.

Mine will be away for at least a month - I will go for look, probably only once and then go up for a ride before she is ready to come home. However, I know that I can call in any time if I wish, but I trust the person doing the work, so am fine just leaving him to get on with it.

I waited for my breaker to invite me over, which he did several times while she was away.

I was happy with the reputation of the person who broke in my girl so felt fine with her being away.

I know some trainers don't like owners popping in as they disrupt their day.

Your paying them to work with your horse.... Go as often as you like! Don't interfere but going to watch is invaluable to knowing what exactly has been done. If your breaker doesn't like it then what are they trying to hide from you?

I am welcome to visit anytime but it is a 90 mins journey from home or 60 mins from work but I work full time/run my own business and have other horses at home to do. So as much as I'd like to watch all the time, it is not possible especially if I wish to have the pennies to keep my animals in the luxury that I would love to live in! ;)
