Hi all,

Wonder if you could help. I'm currently backing and training my 3 year old. On the lunge he will mostly (but not all of the time) start off in canter on the incorrect lead and then disunite afterwards. Sometimes he will start on the correct then change his front lead to again disunite. I have managed to get a proper canter out of him yesterday on both legs but it was hard work. He canters properly on the field.

Do you think I am expecting too much for a normal canter and this is normal for a 3 year old or not?

He has only just started canter work on the lunge btw.

Any help is appreciated.

He's young and unbalanced. He'll get there in the end. Just don't make a big deal of it or overwork him on the lunge.

I really panic as had 2 cases of wobblers so as always, the Internet has got me paranoid! Now think he has everything up with him! Forget he's only 3 sometimes! It's my first experience of backing a youngster too so I'm worrying. He isn't the most clever of ponies either lol

As amymay says he is young and unbalanced. I personally wouldn't be cantering a 3 yo on the lunge or even be doing much lunging at all.

I always prefer long reining in straighter lines and loose schooling so they can really find their own balance

He's been long reined etc so has that down to a tee. We're getting used to the voice now and was having a play and noticed it. With what's happened on the yard with wobblers it scared me x

I know that but was looking at the symptoms and saw disunited canter on it and was like :O lol! Think I'm just expecting my baby to know how to do things straight away lol x

Didn't say he had, just said I saw the disunited bit and got me wondering but apparently disunited canter is common in youngsters so I'm happy x
