My filly has just turned 2, and I have noticed that one of her hooves are splaying out from the sides; the farrier came to trim her on the 17th April to trim the sides, he said the toe will be wearing down by the mud hence why the toe not growing much yet! I thought she was a little lame the other day but it turns out that she is a little foot sore on her right foot especially walking over gravel. Will this correct itself as she grows and matures or what do I need to do, help....:-(((
Thanks
Kelly

Sounds like flare from too much sugar and/or starch in the diet. Is she out at pasture 24/7?

It's tough for youngsters, as you want them to be out all the time, but it's tough dealing with sugars. What, if anything, is she being fed?

You could try adding a good quality supplement, such as pro hoof, as a lack of certain minerals can also cause flaring.

I'm not sure what it is going to do then if you eventually start riding on tarmac. :)
is she landing heel first? is it that she is landing on the toe first and therefore wearing it?
Pics would help especially with the frog well scrubbed out.

She has started to go out 24/7 but does come in occasionally if the weather is horrible. She was being fed mare & youngster mix but only gets a handful now if and when she comes in.....unless people are feeding her apples/carrots on the foot path which I probably cannot stop....it's only one foot, I will try and get some pics!

Re the comment about the toe wearing down in the mud.....that's exactly what I thought 'what happens when she's riding on Tarmac' god knows!!!! What a joke!!!

don't worry, at least you have time to get it sorted.
When you are cleaning the frog to get pics have a look at the central sulchus. This is the depression in the middle of the frog at the back. Is it shallow and dry, is it deep, is it a very deep crevise? If you put a hoof pick in there and poke it does she feel it? When the hoof pick comes out does it smell thrushy?
if she is not landing in the heel then we need to try and find out why and one reason could be pain in the back of the foot.

Thank you so much, that really is helpful.....time to put it to the test, thanks again, I will let you know how I get on with pics hopefully x
