I'm jumping my Mare for the first time tomorrow and would like some advice on how to start mice and easy. She has jumped with the people who breed her as they were a jumping family and she was bold and honest. I just want to start nice and easy for my confidence and hers x

I would say keep it small to start with, and dont let him anticipate the fence so jump it, then maybe 2 laps of canter with no jumping, then jump, then 1 lap, then jump, then 3 laps, keep changeing the amount of laps, so horse doesnt know when to expect to jump. Best of Luck.

Start by trotting into a small cross pole. Maybe do some trotting poles first. It's difficult to gauge as I am not clear exactly what she has done before or how old she is but it sounds like she has jumped a bit before. If you start by trotting over a small cross pole and work up from there it's hard to go wrong. Keep changing the rein too and make sure you dictate the direction taken after the fence. When you are happy with the trot maybe a larger crosspole and try cantering in. When confident with that try a small upright. Then maybe a double with a small fence in, larger fence out. When happy with that ride the corner to a second fence. Before you know it you will be jumping a course but it dosen't all need to happen tomorrow. Hope that helps and good luck.

Ur, thinking the only way a small cross pole could backfire is if she is used to jumping much bigger fences and she is "insulted" by the fence height....has the attitude of "it's not worth leaving the ground for" and hardly does and/or is careless. If that is the case you will need to put it up sooner rarther than later. Best of luck and have fun!
