My unbacked 3 1/2yr old youngster is occassionally throwing out her near hind hoof at walk, not every stride and not all the time. Vet had a quick look last week when she called to give annual boosters but as it was blizzard conditions she's coming back once the snow clears. The horse is straight and sound in trot and canter and has no swelling/heat to the leg and her quarters/thighs are equally muscled. I've tried turning her sharply on a circle and she has no probs crossing over her off hind but takes the near hind out backwards rather than crossing it over when I turn her on the left rein. My vet has given me the ok to get the physio out but as I'm just waiting for the snow to clear I wondered if anyone on the forum had had a similar problem with a h/w youngster. She passed a 5 stage vetting at the end of 2008 and hasn't to my knowledge suffered any field injury over the passed 12 months. I check her twice daily and she lives out 24/7 all year so I think I would have noticed if she'd had an obvious field injury.
 
can she back up ok?

if so, i would get the physio to look (has the vet recommended one?).

has she only recently started doing it or has it been going on for weeks/months?
 
She seems to back up ok. Yes vet has given me the name of a decent physio. She's been throwing the hind leg out occassionally for past few months and it doesn't seem to have improved or got any worse.
 
you might want to get vet to check hocks - not to scare you but mine threw both hindlegs out - like she was walking with a broom up her bum - she threw her right one worse. she was x rayed and found to have arthritis in hocks - another on our yard has same and he walks the same as though they it to take pressure off hock joint. might be worth a check and it can start at any age - not saying it is but worth a look.
 
Yes kezimac vet will be checking her once snow clears. I thought it might be a neuro prob or hip/leg joints. Just seeing if other forum members have had similar symptoms and what the prob was found to be. Looks like it's going to be an insurance claim whatever happens.
 
Apologies if this causes upset - not intended - just reporting what has actually happend to me.

I recently had a horse vetted and they were turning very tight circles - i asked why and they said it is a good indication of the start of wobblers. I really really hope this is not the case.
 
No apologies needed Gingerwitch. I'm not the sort to wear rose tinted spectacles I've been around horses too long for that.
I turned her on a tight circle again this morning and she crossed the nearhind under her body no probs. Guess I'll just have to wait until the snow has gone so I can get her checked out thoroughly. I've tried pulling her to the both sides with her tail and there was plenty of strength there with no indication of any pain or weakness. There's obviously something not right just hope it can be sorted by the vet/physio/exercise programme.
