Yes I have all my horses teeth checked twice a year. Even the youngster just to get him used to it and make sure there are no problems etc.
My gelding kept shaking his head, had the dentist out and he had a wolf tooth, dentist whipped it out and then he stopped shaking his head. My old arab has problems with her teeth so we always keep a close eye on her.
My gelding is a year ahead of yours, however my instructor has just suggested (or rather insisted) I have my geldings teeth checked and his wolf teeth removed before bringing him in to work. This is because they can cause problems and I believe they are easier to remove at an earlier stage of growth than when they are older.
Yes, youngsters should be checked regularly as they can get quite sharp enamel points, also your EDT can check for any retained caps. Most caps will shed of their on accord, however some may become stuck causing discomfort/in some cases may hinder normal eruption of permanent teeth and your EDT can remove them.
Many youngsters wolf teeth are removed as they are of no use and can cause problems with bitting and ridden work later in life, depending on the size and position of the wolf teeth.
Better to prevent any problems now than pay more for corrective dentistry further down the line!
yes! Especially prior to backing / bitting. you EDT or vet will be able to advise re the wolf teeth. some don't need removal. It depends on the individual!
