Hiya !

The boy, at 3 1/2, is definitely teething atm. He is on total rest as he's also having a growth spurt, other than I take him for a walk every evening along the lane with the dogs, which he loves.

As he's so strong, I have been leading him in his bridle, but he chewed almost right thru his happy mouth snaffle yesterday  by really biting down hard on it somehow. Anyhoos, I have a soft rubber mullen mouth bit - would it be a good idea to lead him in this, and just let him chew to help with the pain, or would it be better to not put anything in his mouth at all (my first instinct) ?

He's so keen to have something to chew on, he even tries to grab the dog's stick if he gets a chance.

Any advice muchly appreciated ! sm x

My 3 year old is seething as well and I took him for a walk in his bridle and he seemed really uncomfortable and fidgeted and on the way back half his tooth fell out ! So now I just take him out in a headcollar and he seems much happier. I had him in the snaffle link happy mouth wen his tooth fell out. It's up to u tho to judge if ur horse seems uncomfortable :)

thanks so much for that - it must be his tushes coming thru. I think I will try him with the headcollar and see how we get on. Tho he can get a bit frisky going past the mares :D Maybe that's why the Happy Mouth bits are called that - great for teething :D

Coco is also chewing for England at the moment which is a pain as I don't want him fussy in the mouth, but he isn't happy with a metal bit, so I also debate whether a nathe is a good thing or a bad thing.....

I would use a cavesson tho if I needed that extra bit of control.

yup, i'll get some of that tomorrow, good idea. I've tried to have a good look and feel, and it's the upper tush by the looks of it. He's having his teeth done in a few weeks anyway, so I think it's total rest plus headcollar only for while. I measured him this avo, and he's gone up 1/2 inch this month :D

At 3.5, he probably has retained caps - have you had his mouth checked bya GOOD EDT?? Retained caps can cause a LOT of problems at this age - particularly diastema - butyou could also end up with shear mouth or damaged permanent teeth! We check ours at LEAST every 6 months from 3 to 4.
