I am in the process of bringing my 6 yr old back into work after many niggly little injuries that kept him off work since about July last year. I'm doing ground work with him at the moment before hopefully getting back on in a few weeks. The problem is, he tends to toss his head around when I am lunging him. He also used to do it under saddle. He seems to do it when enjoying himself especially when we do pole work and so it looks to me like he is doing it out of exuberance. I really don't think it's pain related, his teeth were done a couple of months ago, physio was out on Saturday just for a check up and he'll toss his head on the lunge without a saddle. So, I was just wondering how to prevent this behaviour? If anyone else has had this problem and can offer some advice I would appreciate it - Thanks!

My 5 year old mare does the same thing on the lunge but only for the first few upwards transitions but then she stops it. She has recently come back into work having been turned away for the last six months. She also tosses her head about when ridden when she thinks she has done enough - after she has done some work and then has a break. She is only ridden for a max 20 minutes in the school.

I think it is a little bit of annoyance on her part but she is easily ridden through it and already is doing it less and less having come back into work three weeks ago.

Has your dentist checked for blind wolf teeth? My mare had blind wolf teeth and tossed her head around a lot as a youngster as soon as I had them removed she was fine!

My 4 1/2 yr old does the same sort of thing a swing round and then a toss up !! She does it to express herself when tired, excited or annoyed !! Its just a habit that she has picked up. She has had her teeth back sadle checked but i know she has done this since she was a few months old as i bred her. So i kno its just her personality.

Sounds like he is getting tired, muscles over his back neck and legs. Go for a 2 mile jog and see if you don't have any aches and pains in your legs back and neck? and he cann't climb into a hot bath afterwards
