After watching Hickstead today I was thinking what a lovely bloke Geoff Billington seems to be! And then I was remembering showjumpers from my youth - David Broome, Harvey Smith, Eddie Macken, Caroline Bradley........ (showing my age now!!

i really like mary king,,, how consistant is she, and how down to earth!!!

As a child it was Caroline Bradley - I remember being really shocked and saddened when she died.
I agree about Mary King. I also met Blythe Tait once and he was really nice, oh and Jennie Loriston-Clarke too.

I like Mary King, too - she always seems so down to earth and normal, despite being a top rider. I've also got a soft spot for Andrew Hoy.

I find a lot of the younger riders these days are a bit 'brattish'!

Yea - they are a bit aren't they!

I think it is their age and because they have become so successful so young! A bit cocky me thinks!

Mine would have to be Jennie Loriston-Clarke, she was always my hero and then I met her one day and she agreed to teach me, taught me whenever I could get to her for years, lovely lady and a real character.

Also David Hunt, very knowledgable and really cares for the sport and his horses.

Geoff Billington is my fave showjumper wth Tim Stockdale and John & Michael Whittaker in runner up positions.

Carl Hester for the old 'Stressage' he's just so long and lean and fabulous lol.

Love Pippa Funnell and Mary King for the eventing contingent.

Others who i admire/admired are David Broome, Harvey Smith, Eddie Macken, Rodrigo Pessoa, Jos Lansik (sp?) and Marcus Ehning.

Woop's got totally carried away there! lol

Mary King, I met her when I was about 10, she was running a few horses at Lowesby Horse Trials and must of been quite busy, but she still stopped, signed my programme, let us take pictures with her and one of her horses (I think it wa Star appeal).
I was a HUGE fan of King William, can still remember her telling me all about him!
Show Jumpers would be John Whitaker, he is so quite and seem to be able to ride anything amazingly.
And from normal people, my very first riding instructor! she could get on anything and it would go well for her. she was fearless and stuck like glue, all I wanted was to grow up to be exactly like her!!

What a great question! I've had a little trip down memory lane and the people who stand out for me are these.

Showjumping
Eddie Macken
Alwin Schockemöhle
Hugo Simon

Eventing
Mary King
Lucinda Green
Princess Anne
Willian Fox-Pitt

In the 70s there seemed to be so much more equestrian sport on TV than today. I loved watching the masters in action.

Ginny Elliot/Leng

Anne Moore

Harvey Smith

Geoff Billington- loved his impersonation of Robert Smith!!!

Nick Skelton and the Whittaker bros.

Going even further down Memory Lane - anyone else remember Piero and Raimondo d'Inzeo ..? And Nelson Pessoa, of course, and Captain Harry Llewellyn of Foxhunter fame (although I think I must have just heard about him - a bit before my time).

Also enjoyed watching David Broome and Harvey Smith, Marion Mould, Anneli Drummond-Haye, Pat Smythe, Alison Dawes, Ted Edgar.

Present generation: Mary King, WFP, the Whitakers, Carl Hester, Lucinda Green.

As driftersmum said the showjumpers Alwin S, Hugo Simon, The French Guy who rode Jappeloup?
Eventing Mark Todd, Lucinda Green, and Mark Phillips.
Dressage Stephen Clarke, Chris Bartle and Jenny Loriston- Clark.
Showing Vin Toulson and Roy Trigg.
From an ordinary person point of view my mum, my grandad and kerilli!
