October 2016 I bought my mare knowing she had hardly any muscle and was underweight but not knowing she cribbed. All winter she cribbed (and windsucked a fair bit of the time) but nearly a year later I'm so so happy with her. She's put on a lot of weight (a big belly! Never thought I'd see the day), has some muscle now and her cribbing has gotten much better. Before she'd sometimes ignore her hay and crib in her stable or if she was tied up and bored she'd crib the fence, sometimes after being fed by the fence she'd crib. Now after being fed by the fence she prefers to have a munch on the leaves and grass around her, much prefers her treat ball or haynet in her stable and when waiting around to be tacked up or groomed a lot of the time she's happy to stand still without grabbing hold of the fence or stable door (I prefer to give her the option to have hay though, keeps her occupied)
I know the vice will never go away but I never thought it would get this much better even with everything I was trying to do to help her!

Just wandering if anybody else had success stories with cribbing horses?

Ive had one cribber and I couldnt improve it with her. None of my others ever copied her and she actually kept her weight well, she wouldnt crib all day - just on and off. She destroyed a lot of fence posts unfortunately. I never tried to stop her doing it though with regard to electric fencing etc. as I thought that'd be cruel, I just kept her out 24/7 with company, plenty of hay and enough grazing. I didnt know you could improve it massively so your story is interesting. Unfortunately my experience with her cribbing has probably put me off ever having another though.

My connemara didnt crib until he was 5 years old and I took him to a big livery yard where he was stabled opposite a cribber. He started it, it got really bad very quickly, outside he would crib on fence posts, inside on his door. the noise drove me nuts and I sold him.

My old mare used to crib in her stable but not in the field. She would also crib if you gave her treats as well and cribbed at the two different stables I had moved her to. Then when I moved to my current yard, she stopped cribbing instantly and never did so right till the end of her days!
