I love using alternatively raised poles as my horses seem to really enjoy it and it definitely makes them more careful and expressive. I then went to the Andrew and Bettina Hoy demo the other evening n loved a similar polework exercise they did. To be honest when I jump I just tend to put up a grid or a course.

Bit of a random post really but I was wondering if there are any pole or jumping exercises that you really like or regularly use with your horse?

A bounce with a 4 long or 5 short stride distance to an upright, gets them really using themselves then thinking upon landing as you choose whether to hold a nice short canter or open up a bit.

Curving lines and angles are good. I like raised canter poles for helping the canter- put them on a circle and you can change the length of the canter.

bounce, stride, to a decent parallel is one. umm, related distance of 3 strides to an oxer, gradually building it bigger. V poles. figure of 8 with an upright in the middle is a good one, i like playing with that, learnt that one from Leslie Law. it varies really, depends what the horse needs most, obviously.
he did an exercise of a small upright with a parallel (increasing in size) a short bounce distance from it... still haven't had the nerve to try that one!

Bounce and a short 2 stride to a decent upright. Well it works on my long backed ship of a horse.

A five stride related distance (or 3) that you can either lengthen for a 4 stride or shorten for a 4 stride.

A canter pole, which is then raised to a good height on a large circle I think is fantastic for the canter rhythm and balance.

a double of square parallels, 2 strides apart.

half the time I have this up at home as you can jump through it as a double, or you can do a figure of eight over them changing the rein constantly, excellent exercise for accuracy, getting the horse to bascule and teaching them to pick their legs up. Personally I find it invaluable!
