Seems like a good time of year to shop for wellies and my last pair have been leaking for months.

What are your favourites? How well do they last? Any recommendations for skinny legs?

I've worn ariat for ages but needed to buy a new pair every year.
Bought le chameux because they're a slim fit but the foot bed is too flexible for walking over rugged terrain.
Had some success with muck boots in terms of fit and comfort but they didn't last too long.
Had lots of leather country boots but they don't stand up to the mud.

What am I missing?

Good Housekeeping mag recommends FitFlop wellies. £100 but currently £45.
I'm still in my Aigle ones, bought 40+ years ago. This was before the company was bought out by, I believe, Chinese manufacturers.

I love Dunlop wellies, I've only had 2pairs in 30+ years working with horses (the acifort types). My second pair were bought because I wanted to have a pair at home as well as on the yard, not because the first pair died. They don't get any points for slim fitting though!!

If I want a slim boot, I do also really like cabbotswood leather boots which I buy when they have a sale on. They only last 3-4 years but I figure for the price that's not bad compared to ariat.

I have slim calves too. Tried Bogs which developed a split quite quickly (3 months) but had a slightly narrower calf than most.
Chameau Giverny are good for slim calves - unfortunately I'm between sizes with them (or perhaps fortunately given price). Hunters OK-ish but also split quickly (6 months).

Any riding wellies will tend to be slimmer on the calf - I have a pair of basic Decathlon ones and just use them as walking wellies. I used to love my Muck Boot ones but they don't make them anymore.

More comfy footbed and neoprene lined are Gumleaf, also fairly narrow calf size, but may also have too flexible a sole for your liking? Depends which model. ETA I was size smaller than my usual size in them. Also, just looked them up and it says they are made on a unisex last & suit both men and women...don't know about that as I have narrow feet and they feel great.

Tried to get hold of warmwellies this winter when I needed new wellies, but they were out of stock in my size, for weeks.

A shame indeed they stopped making these riding wellies. I still have a pair I bought some years ago.

I've had several pairs from work (zoo), both the Acifort and the Purofort type. They didn't last more than 2 or 3 years each but I did like them though. And no: they don't do slim fitting!

Thank you all. I am tempted to try some cheap ones, I bet there are the perfect pair somewhere but it might take forever to find. I need a welly shop.

I've looked for a few brands mentioned and it is a good time to buy, most are around half price so I'll order a couple to try.

Le chameux for me but the ones with the wetsuit lining, soles are great I think. X

You have to buy new wellies every year??? And they are Ariats??
I’m stunned. Do they split then?

I’ve had the same pair of Dunlops (the one with neoprene lining) for about 10 years now.
Stylish, they are not. But I do all my yard work and dog walking in them, they are fab.

If I’m going somewhere where I want to look a bit more stylish, I will wear my country boots (not Dubarrys though, ugh)

Just wondering what to wear for festivals this summer though - the Dunlops stink of horse…

Probably not much help if you're fed up of Ariats but Hope Valley have their Burford wellies reduced to £50 at the moment. I'm con buying a pair for myself but I have pretty solid calves so not sure if they'll suit me. Do they really only last a year?

Otherwise I find Aigles very comfortable but you can never find those on offer and they don't have a particularly slim calf either!

Dunlop Blizzards. One of the few things horsey I’ve bought which have actually been a good buy. Lasted all winter, fur lined so no frozen feet and I’ve actually carried on wearing them this summer (what summer?) and still going strong. Only about £35.

I panicked for a moment thinking they’d stopped making Muck Boots - mine are probably 12 years old and still grand but I’d be gutted if I couldn’t replace them!

I do wonder how other people's wellies last so long!

I suspect my slim calves mean they bend/crease more so the ariat always split along a crease line around the ankle. I don't ride in them but I do drive in them so that prob doesn't help.

My muck boots went where the sole joins the boot after about 18 months.

Ariat do seem to be on offer everywhere, it's tempting, I know they'll split but for £50 it's not too bad and they've excellent soles with steel shanks to stop them twisting.

I noticed Harry Hall do something that's so similar to muck boot they must be a licensed rebrand. Only £50 so I might try (from amazon with free returns).

Someone up thread mentioned grub boots, saw them when I was searching and they look good but I'd never heard of them. They're on offer too.

I was going to splash out on some new Le Chameau when I was in decathlon and spotted their “Solognac” wellies! I couldn’t say no to neoprene lined for £80 and actually look very smart and flattering! Worth a look!

I’m a welly killer. Ariats, hunters, grubs… they all split within a couple of months wear.

Best I’ve had are some neoprene lined tall wellies from Amazon. They lasted 2 years but have now started to seep water in through the side. Not bad for £20 though!
