What have you all used to make random homemade jumps?

There are some red and white blocks that have been parked along my road for a good 6 months that would make good coloured things to jump over!

has anyone accidentally aquired anything from the side of the road and used them as jumps before?

We're dumpsville here - country lane dead end, so get all the fly tippers, one time the lazy B just tipped a load of grass and soil right in the middle of the road, so have acquired all manner of plastic cones, bricks, tyres, planks etc. Currently there's a huge eucalyptus trunk in the layby needs us to get the tractor out to bring it home, is about 1m high = great XC jump Our neighbour beat us to the rest of it with his chainsaw and took that for firewood.

I saw pics of a pony for sale with cut off roadworks plastic barrier thingies as fillers. I have been tempted ever since but I just cannot be that bad!

It reminds me of when I was a child I had a "friend" called coney who was a cone from road works outside my house. I loved that cone and my mother made me put it back with the rest when the road works were over. Don't you dare laugh :o:D

In my teens my friends & I 'aquired' enough of those red & white roadwork barriers to build a full sj course from them. The ones that are made of two planks.
Currently our jumps consist of some decent home made poles & diy planks & a set of proper wooden wings. The other wings & fillers consist of beer crates, roadwork cones, feed bins, old buckets, random old pieces of wood painted as fillers, old garden fence panel, old tyres, some roadworks barriers (the blue ones, but use them as scary extras rather than part of the jump, I'm more safety conscious now), old wooden feed manger, & random junk used as scary fillers as & when. Got a palisade improvised from pallets & random spare wood. Cones & the upright parts of the red & white roadworks barriers are also great poles for gymkhana games. Homemade jumps are fab, they were all daughters had ever jumped, the first time she ever saw proper jumps was clear round at her first ever show & she never batted an eyelid, nor has she since, everything else is tame compared to the obscure stuff she jumps at home.

When we were kids and it was still common to have a milkman and glass bottles  we amassed a fine collection of milk crates to use as the forerunner to the now common plastic block jump wings, they were fab as they could be stacked as high as you dared.

We topped them off with a load of white plastic but slightly bendy / flimsey poles.

happy days :)

I forgot one - the chicken ark. With or without chickens. We have one that's triangular - hen house one end, with a run built in and a shelter the other end, so solid at the sides, mesh infill in the middle, quite sturdy as it's a Foresham one. Is a fab 2ft 10 or so xc style jump - the hens were not bothered by being jumped as they were used to snorty pony anyway.

I'm currently clearing the undergrowth and debris that was left behind by the people who were previously in our house. Apart from the stripped caravan parts and the large pile of car radios there are a load of road mending barriers:)

Not actually MY home-made jumps, but I made them for my little cousin (my horse would just step over them lol). She absolutely LOVES them. We just cut the ends off of pallets, and got rid of all the sharp bits on one side, then sanded them down so no splinters and painted them. Took me about 4 hours to do all of these for her, and the main exciting thing for Lucy was being able to paint them whatever colours she wanted. The initial idea was to make some cheap bright fillers to get him used to them so she can start some shows next year... The jumps can be as small or as high as you want, and any colour - I was really lucky because we had some pallets and paint lying about so they were virtually free!! Hope you like them and this inspires you ;)

Theres a pile of wood (the size of a house!) up the road where the local builders dump all the left over wood. I asked the owner if i could go and salvage last summer and packed my car FULL of wood odd all types, sizes.

My friend and i then threw everything into the arena, and armed with a saw and power drill made the following:

The diversion sign came about because someone thought it funny to divert traffic through the village and up my drive...... so i didnt actually TAKE the sign, it was donated by some funny person!

:-) cost = nothing but a weekend of hard work, nails and left over paint

From roadside we have traffic barricade things (huge bright red dividers), traffic cones (red ones and yellow heavy warning ones) and a couple of signs (won't use as flimsy metal - got them as a template for OH to make horse friendly ones) and one more recent heavy plastic road sign. Amazing how nice workers are when you approach them to clear a few bits after they're done :D

We didn't actually take anything but one year we were a bit bored and so made a full course out of wooden patio furniture, the final jump being a huge christmas tree with road cones (they were already here so technically we didn't take them :)) infront and pretty much anything else we could find to make it bigger. Then as my friend was approaching the jump the little yard dog decided to go rustling in the tree so she jumped her too!!

I should add we did actually have a full set of show jumps this was just more fun!

I've used some (emptied) plastic containers that emergency heating oil came in (I think they are 25l), half filled with water for stability. These can be stood up on tall or short side to prop poles on (there is a recess by the handle which stops poles rolling off) although to be fair I only use them for walk and trot pole work rather than jumping. They are safe and also make good fillers!

big traffic cones are the best!!! fillers on there sides, and wings stood up. we even found some long bits of old wood we painted into lovely poles and have survived about 5 years so far :)

Clearing up after one of my liveries, I took a load of traffic cones to the local police station.

The desk sergeant asked how would they find the owners?

I pointed out that their name was on the side..."POLICE".

Some liveries have got a nerve!:D
