Does anyone else worry about splitting horses up that have bonded?
Im moving mine away from my mums two mares, my gelding is very attached to them and vice versa, which is part of my problem, as he never wants to leave them.

My mums giving me a guilt trip saying that they love each other and it's not fair on them, but I need to move my boy as ive got no where to ride and hers are retired so she doesn't have that problem.

What are your thoughts peep's on your horses friends and splitting them up?

no worries at all.
my old lad was split up from his year long companion when we moved to a new yard. his old companion was left in the trailer while he got to race off into huge new field with new companion. He didnt evan look back. thats how fickle horses are!

I wouldn't worry. A few weeks ago 3 ladies with their 5 horses/ponies left our yard to go to a DIY field. My girl's field mate went and 2 of the boys who had lived together for years moved to separate fields.

I hack up to ride with one of the ladies and my horse and her previous field mate just ignore each other, no acknowledgement or anything. Yet when they were field mates they would call if one was in the field and one was in the school, they also used to call when one came back to the field. I was surprised that there was no apparent recognition when they saw each other only a week after moving.

The 2 boys moved up to fields a month apart from each other, and again, there was no recognition/acknowledgement of each other when they saw each other again.

I thought horses were a bit more 'attached' than this, but it seems that they live for the herd they are currently with. Or, at least these ones do. Good thing though, I would have hated my girl to pine.

OP I think your mum is being a bit unfair! Don't hesitate with your plan, as others have said it's anthropomorphising (phew big word for this time in the morning) them to think they'll pine and be unhappy. If your horse has new mates he won't give a stuff, in fact I reckon he'll be happier he can do more with his mum!!! :) xx

Thanks, that does make me feel a bit better.
When I took him away for a while before he did make new friends with another mare (its always a mare! lol ) so im sure he'l be fine.
