Your horses legs-boots, bandages or naked?

Well, I dont normally put anything on my mares legs for schooling, but since her splint bone fractured in two places last year, I now put bandages on the back.
To jump, she'll have open fronted tendon boots on front and bandages behind.
When Arch is ridden, he has sports wraps around boots on front and brushing boots on back.

Mine currently has no shoes on behind.. so at the moment

Schooling - front boots / or nothing
Jumping - front boots
Hacking - if only do a slow one then nothing
Competing - SJ - Open fronted tendon boots , fetlock boots behind
XC - booted all round

Probably get shot down for it, but I sometimes think we can wrap horses up too much. Once we are competing, or there are competitions coming up, then I tend to put boots on all round (when he is shod allround) but only to prevent missing a competition due to a silly knock (and for schooling on the flat I often only use back boots as he is a bit close behind) . I spent so long doing hunters and normally they wore no boots and we had very few problems.. (most problems were from the ones which had worn boots - from rubs etc)

I use lightweight brushing boots in front for hacking/schooling etc at home along with fetlock boots. One of mine also wears fetlock boots in the field as he catches himself all the time.
I have some posh white boots for dressage lessons/dressage warm up.
Tendon boots & matching fetlocks for show jumping.
Boots all round for XC, Dalmar in front & N.E.W hind events. Premier Equine on the other horse.

Hacking/Schooling - bandages all round
Jumping - open fronted boots or bandages all round.
Competing
SJ - open fronted or nothing in front, only behind if needed.
XC - open fronted prolites in front and over reach boots, prolites behind

i use boots allround for everything, and front boots always have atendon protection, used to bandage for schooling/light hacks but it was such a faff and athe bandage offered no protection to strike injuries etc, so i now use boots-much more protection imo

Mine does brush and catch herself so boot up all round for each discipline

Eskadron Fluffies Tendon and Fetlock for comps
Clarendon Tendon and Fetlock for home SJ
Clarendon Eventer boots all round for XC
Clarendon Hunter Boots for Hunting/Fun Rides
Stretch and Flex all round for schooling
Gygax Brushing boots for hacking (leather outer and lambskin lined, v.nice!)

Very sadly I do have 11 pairs of boots - think I must have a fetish!

Naked! Except hi-viz leg bands for schooling sometimes, so I can see what his legs are doing in the mirror.

In general, he seems to have a pretty good idea of where his feet are, and he's barefoot ATM.

We're not doing much jumping yet, but a fair amount of fast hacks.

Open fronted tendon boots, brushing boots behind for hacking and schooling, knee boots if hacking on the road. Sometimes bandage if specifically doing flatwork/if I have time!!

Tendon boots and fetlock boots for Sjing 99% of the time, sometimes leave them off if is being careless!!
XC he has Prolite boots behind, and prob PE infront this year... and overreach boots

Don't normally put anything on for schooling unless horse has had time off so I think he will be silly.

Hacking - front and back brushing boots
Show jumping - front and back boots (Premier Equine Air Cooled Comp boots) and overreach boots
Lunging - front and back brushing boots

I try and keep mine in boots all round for any riding bar just going for a plod, I went to a top dressage trainer once fo a lesson and didnt have hinds on and he said do you like your horses legs to which I of course said yes and he said well put boots on it then!!

Ever since then I always things its not worth the risk, anything to limit injury/brushing.
And id certainly now never school or jump without 4 boots on!!

Open fronted tendon boots and fetlock boots behind for schooling, hacking and show-jumping. Cross-country boots all round for galloping and x-country
smile.gif

Prolite boots on front for SJ and all round for XC. Also put on over-reach boots on for XC. None for schooling, but put on wraparound boots on for lunging.

Ok share horse 1# he wears nothing...ever for anything
grin.gif

Share horse 2# wears Event boots behind for jumping and over reach boots behind for jumping and schooling as he catches himself so low down no other boot protects him

Schooling/Hacking nothing he is v sensible with his legs
SJ open fronted tendon boots on front, back fetlocks if ness'
XC proctor boots/saratoga bandages all round
Turned out over reaches on the front to stop pulling shoes off!

SJ schooling at home nothing as we have plastic poles, and if he knocks it I want him to realise, and pick up better next time!

I once turned up at a SJ clinic and had forgotten all my boots, the instructor said carry on anyway see how you go, he was so careful and acurate he didnt touch a thing, I think we can wrap them up too much but a good balance is needed to keep them protected whilst also stopping them getting lazy and reliant on all the kit we strap on!

Brushing boots all round including over reach boots. I will bandage if I have more time or doing more strenuous work.
I dont boot up for turnout as my horses are out everyday and dont go loopy but my mare has bed socks on at night as she is fully cliped out.

When he doesn't have mud coated legs...

To school: PE Support/schooling boots, front and back

To jump: Open front clarenden tendon boots on front and PE support/schooling boots on back

To hack: combination of the above + knee boots

over reach for hacking whatever speed or schooling or lungeing

open tendon and back brushing and o/r for SJ

NEW leather xc boots and brushing and o/r for XC

Well I'm going to throw a spanner in the works here:
never wear boots at home, whether schooling, jumping or hacking (with the exception of lunging when they have boots on all round).
BSJA - either no boots or just front leather tendon boots
XC - prolites in front, sabre behind.
I have a set of white brushing boots for dressage lessons but that's more about seeing what the legs are doing than anything else.

Most of our horses are hunters and never wear boots. Admittedly I do have a Carthorse with about a foot and a half of bone. I had a TB that was close behind and wore back boots all the time. If they don't actually need them, they don't get them.

Mine vary depending on the horse.

B just wears open fronted tendon boots for schooling, hacking, jumping.

Prolites and Sabre back boots for xc with over reach boots

J wore boots alround for everything as he was always catching himself and then no matter how careful you were he would get an infection and need antibiotics.

Grey will prob just wear the same as B as he isnt close behind.

Bandages all round, usually with Eskadron climatex pads underneath. PE over reach boots. If hacking, woof wear brushing boots all round and over reach boots. Don't usually turn out with boots unless going to a new field or been in for a while.

I used to go out with someone who designs and manufactures horse boots and he made me totally paranoid about certain kinds of boots. E.g. I would never use neoprene "support" boots - because they don't truly provide support and do heat up the tendons. I bandage to protect against brushing or knocks, and I know how to bandage properly.

I'm with you on that. Mine has fronts for jumping & boots all round for XC / lunging. For hacking & schooling I don't usually bother.

When my horse did a suspensory ligament, my vet said that no boot or bandage would protect against it. So mine only have boots to protect against strike injuries or if they're studded.

My horse wears brushing boots on all four for schooling/hacking/jumping and my pony only wears those premier equine sports boot things for jumping

Schooling/Lunging - Stretch and Flex Flatwork Wraps

Hacking - Westropp Brushing-Knee Boots

SJ - Trizone Open Fronted Tendon and Fetlock boots

XC - haven't taken Tara anywhere yet but have got some things in March so better get a move on and decide.
Am drooling over the Dalmar air-cooled eventer boots so will most likely be them along with my old over reach boots.

At home and hacking - generally no boots, though depends on horse. May use brushers if horse has tendency to knock itself.

SJ - open fronted tendons, possibly hind fetlock boots depending on the horse.

XC - full prolite XC boots front and back and overreach boots

Past couple of horses have been noticeably happier and legs noticeably colder when boots aren't used daily.

Depends on the horse - one horse I hardly use boots except for jumping or lunging. The other wears them for most work as she's close behind and has had injuries in front. She wears wraps in front and brushing behind for hacking/schooling, and 'standard' competition wear for jumping/XC.

They both sometimes wear boots in the field depending on weather/new horses etc. For example recently they've had boots all round every day as it's so yuk out there. Hardly ever use them in summer though - too hot!
