Your horses name and where did it come from?

I bought my lad from a local riding school. When he arrived there the YO must have been catching up on her Thomas Hardy as she called him Troy after Sergeant Troy in 'Far From The Madding Crowd' because he has a handsome face (and was a bit of a rogue). He has been with me for over 10 years now and has turned into a delinquent pensioner - still causing havoc!

Our homebreds all start with the same letter as their respective parent - Boys after the father, girls after the mother. All to do with the sky in some way shape or form. You start running out of 'R' names after a while ... Thanks Ranger! So we have/had Rainsong, Rolling Thunder, Remmirath and Rainbow Quest. The fillies were/are Bellatrix, Lunar Fire, Song Of The Stars.

The ones we haven't named - Jefertiti - his mother is Nefertiti and the whole family are 'titi's'. Gray Mountain - the family are named after famous parts of films, he's from Lord Of The Rings and his other most famous sibling is Honey Ryder from James Bond.

We had one horse in the yard who was called The Starboard Bow and as soon as I heard that one thing came into my head but I couldn't say it out loud. So we went down the route of - the starboard bow is part of a ship, a ship has a captain but you can't call him Captain. Captain's are normally called Skipper's so Skipper he became. I let that settle in for a week or so before saying what first came into my head and you can guess what he would have been called if I had opened my mouth - There's Klingon's on the starboard bow ...

The APHA and AQHAs names all have names to do with their bloodlines, it is traditional, you get a good idea of their breeding simply by looking at their names.

eg. Zeus is Dashbardee Jet (Dash = Dash for Cash, bar = Three Bars, dee = Sonny Dee, Jet = Jet Dial) Zeus was bred in Quebec

Outlaws Robin Gold ------> Robins Jag of Gold, The Jagged Robin etc, well known names in the Paint world. She was imported from Idaho, USA

Ella is Elegante del Cala Cobre = I think it means Elegant of Copper Creek, something like that, all registered Paso Finos have Spanish names. She was imported from PA, USA.

Baikala Bey = Amurath Baikal was her sire, by the beautiful Bask.

My mares passport name derives from her sire. Her half brother and sister had similar names derived from the sire. Her stable name holds no link to the passported name, I bought her from her breeder, so I'm only assuming she liked the name :)

Fergus. Which means virile. And he really isn't.

And Darach, which means dark oak in Gaelic, but we call him Daemon because he's my friendly Daemon. Thank you my friendly Daemon, for the abandon of your giving, and making life worth living. Which comes from a poem by Louis MacNiece.

Borsh... Poor boy was named after a washing machine when I bought him haha!
Promptly changed to Bailey- he was the colour of Baileys Irish Cream!... Still is so far but I see more grey hair each year eek!

Elizara - I'm an Anne Macaffery fan.
Rosewood Ardashir - Arabian, named by his breeder. I would have picked something people could pronounce!
Diva Roxx - Diva from the moment she was born and born to be a rock chick!
Maggie Diamond - when I bought her, her paddock name was Sparkle and her show name was Wickham Park Made Of Ice. Luckily she was only a yearling at the time and hadn't had time to be emotionally damaged by either. So, Maggie becuase it suits her and "diamond" becuase she really was a diamond in the rough just needing a bit of polish to sparkle.

GK - is short for Gene Kelly. I was going to name him after Fred Astaire, but there was already a Freddie where he lived and there was no way I was keeping the name he came with... Randy. Yuck!

Bo - his name was Sunny (after his Sire - Desert Sun), but all the animals named Sunny that I know are a bit "special." The only name my friend and I could agree on (as we both owned him at the time) was Bonanza (we had recently watched the the episode of supernatural called Frontierland) and were throwing around names from the show... Bonanza came up, we liked it, named him that and subsequently his name was shortened to Bo (pronounced Beau) and has not been called Bonanza ever since. :)

Scrumpy. Exmoor pony bought as a foal at the Exmoor pony sales after yours truly had been forced to drink a pint or two of the local cidery brew in a darkened beer tent before getting to the auction ring. I was FORCED I tell ya, and I still don't know how that bidding card came to be in my hand or why I was waving my arm around when the auctioneer pointed at me.

My came with their names already registered with their breed society and don't want to change them. My connie's stable name now is actually his prefix - his original stable name did suit him. It was Highway which I think is more suited to a QH than a native!!

Ffin is short for Muffin, he just looked like a mule, mealey mouthed and huge ears, it stuck and as he sort of out grew the name it was shortened to Ffin.

I wanted to call my little gypsy cob a fabulous name like "Cloudly Day" but it just didn't fit him, I bought him off a guy called Moses, one of the young lads shouted Moses your colt is loose........ I thought Moses' colt was a good name ...shortened to Moses. It does suit him, that and his nick name of Toad!

Vlacq Majid or Marjorie; Minnismoor Mistique or Marygold. Both horses came with their registered names (the first part being the stud name in both cases!) and their stable names. I liked them so chose not to change them.

Mine is Oaktree Pippi Longstockings on her passport - Oaktree is the farm she was bred at and shes Pippi Longstockings because she has 4 white legs, i was a very imaginative 16 year old! she didn't have a name when i got her and she was supposed to be Pip tempoarily but it stuck! - I now don't enter her at shows under her full name as i wish i'd picked a better one! I just enter her as Pip, qand she gets referred to as P for short!

Dolly's official name is Kuwaits Cloudy Bay - dad was Kuwait Beach and Cloudy Bay was her breeder's father's favourite wine (and has since become mine!). She was nicknamed Dolly because her breeder thought she walked like a dollybird!

My sons retired TB is passported Penhaligon Arkansas , her great grand sire was Northern Dancer, her passport is full of well known names... We call her Penny... When she came to the yard we are on she was unrideable, wild to say the last, now she is 24 , retired and so chilled out, she turned into a fab schoolmistress, just because of good handling from out YO.

My mares stable name is Andee. Apparently its was because the stud where she was born went through the alphabet so A, B, C 'Andee'. Her show name is Double Vision which is easily understandable when her parents were Bouzy Tom & Border Brew :)

Archie was called Andy when he arrived, and I felt it was just way too human so I changed it to Archie - similar enough for him to still be able to answer to it, but different enough for it not to sound like I was talking about my OH and not my horse! This was before Archie became a really popular name for little boys.

In fact I like to give all my animals old fashioned human names but they're all coming back into fashion now. My next horse (not that it's iminent!) was going to be Bert until a friend called her little boy Bertie. My dog is Mabel and all of a sudden, there are little girls called Mabel springing up all over the place.

Maddie/Madeline - her registered name is Maesnewydd Modlen but the guy I bought her off refused to call her Modlen so it became Madeline and got shorter from there :). I had planned to re-name her but as we stayed on the yard she was bought off I couldn't really without upsetting the original namer and now it just fits her,

"Dubai Tiger" named in honour of the golfer Tiger Woods by Sheikh Mohammed when he visited the Godolphin stables in Dubai where Tiger was being trained.

My youngster never came with a stable name and her passport name was Fangs Flicker (which i didnt like), so I ended up naming her Breagha (Gaelic for beautiful) and then put on her passport Bragail (Gaelic for cheeky) Breagha. Her original name is still on her passport but I like to use my own.

Effie was unnamed with Weatherby's passport (pas sported at a few days old), but had the names Bella (crossed out) and Efcharisto written on the front. I assume whoever named her Efcharisto shortened it to Effie. I have since found that Efcharisto was/is a TB gelding, so why her then owners named her after him is a mystery! I have since found that her 'proper name' was Feinex, so sent off her passport to Weatherby's and got the correct details sorted. I have only
Ever known her as Effie though, and I do like it so Effie she
is :)

I have only had Chester a few weeks and he came riddled with lice and worms and very underweight. The name on his passport is Reeko, spelt just like that, and while it described a scabby scrap of a lad to a T it doesn't suit his personality or how he will look once healthy. I asked friends on a forum for ideas and liked Chester, it really sits him.

Ant- on the racing yard he was Named Ant as two of them came together from the same owner and they just got named Ant and Dec. he has a big forehead too haha!
Kaleigh- named by her first owner as she was unnamed(we think!) when she came off the boat from Ireland at age 3. It's not the name Kayleigh and it means beautiful and slender...she is both!

Well, my horse is called Sam which I didn't choose and wouldn't be a name I would have chosen but he was already used to it so I didn't change it. His name on his passport is Heathcliffe but that really doesn't suit him - he's way too cute to be a dark and brooding Heathcliffe. As I only do unaffiliated competing I chose 'Chicago Blues' for his competing name. His colour is what is commonly called blue and white and I was listening to a radio interview with Dave Grohl from the Foo Fighters and he was talking about music that inspired him. He mentioned the Chicago Blues and I kind of liked it for Sam. It goes with his colour and there are loads of Irish people in Chicago so that fits too.
