Your horses previous owners

Hello,
Just a general question whether people have contacted their horses previous owners? Via passport addresses? I know someone who has for their older pony and got a sad story.
I was thinking for my 4 yrold but not really sure ill get much info as I know he was bought from racing sale before I had him!
 
I contacted the previous owner (and breeder) of my old mare, the information she gave me helped me understand why she behaved the way she did (and it was good to know that it wasn't me that was making her behave like a loon!).

On the flip side, I've been contacted by the current owner of a horse we bred. We lost touch with the guy who bought him off us and five years later I got a call off the couple who currently own him. They bought him as a 3yo in a pretty poor state and explained all the issues he'd had since they'd bought him :( but the good news was they'd spent two years building him up and re-training him and he is a real credit to them now :)
 
I know most of Deano's. He was from a local race yard so I phoned them before buying. I stayed in touch with the girl I bought him from and another recognised him from pics on here and got in touch. It's great finding out a bit about their life before hand. Do you know who his trainer was? I think it is always worth a try. *
 
I did, with a 4yo cob. I found it pretty interesting, gives you a good idea of what they've already been through aswell. Also ended up with a photo of him as an 18mth old. Made me smile :)
 
I have - and I am soo pleased! I am in contact with his breeder who sent me the most gorgeous photos of him as a foal. Then this weekend I heard back from another previous owner who sent me some even more gorgeous photos of him all done up and looking gorgeous at a show (he was in poor condition when he was sold to me)

It's been so lovely hearing all about his past and the previous owners have all been pleased to hearr from me.

It's a nice way of fitting all the bits of the jigsaw together and allows you to understand why they are the way they are now (even if you uncover some sad stories).
 
I bought two of mine from their breeders, and did keep in touch with them for a while, must try and find out if one of them is still alive, as would be nice to let him know how my mare is doing.
My pony came from people who bought him as a foal, so I knew most of the history on him, what they were prepared to say anyway!! Sadly I lost touch with them, although would love to let them know how he is too!!
Depending on the trainer, you may or may not get lots of info on the horse, so it might be worth a try!!

I got Hunter from my vet as we did a swap (as I had a 3yo and needed something mature) I know hse bought him from racing sales and on jis passport just says his breeders I think but they're not registered online as racing breeders so I think he came from a 'normal' family.

I just wrote to them saying something along the lines of

"I have recently bought Champion the Wonder Horse and am contacting all previous owners on his passport incase people are interested to hear how he is getting on. Also I would love to hear some stories about his past and see any old photos of him.

If you are interested in getting in touch with me please email me at ............. as I would love to hear from you "
 
I am in contact with my horses previous owners from the age of 4 until I bought him aged 14. I am thinking of writing to his breeder (address on passport and confirmed by a previous owner), who had him until the age of 4, to see if I can find out anymore information regarding his breeding.
 
I contacted my boys old owners and it is one of the best things I have ever done.

One girl owned him for 11 years and I can still remember the reaction I got from her when I first called, never known someone cry with happiness so much, that made it all worthwhile for me, to know he had spent so much of his life with someone who loved him so much. She has been to visit him quite a few times now and I swear he does remember her. I like the thought that he gets to see all his old mom and that she still love him so much.
 
I contacted the first owner on my haffy's passport. I have had him 7yrs & only contacted them about a year ago. She bought him of a dealer & that she was a dealer that sold kids pony's & she ended up putting him into the market due to him being dangerous, she didn't want to risk her riders any longer on him & she didn't want to ruin her reputation by selling him private. The people who bought him from market only had him a year then I bought him & I was even looking for another, but saw him on a site & fell in love as you do :rolleyes:

When she told me what he was like, I told her that was how he was with me at the begininging, but now he is like a different pony still has his moments, but don't they all. So it wasn't what I wanted to hear, but on the other hand it was nice to know I was the only person not to give up on him (although I wanted to at the start as had many tears) & that he has a home for life.

She was over the moon to hear he had finally found a good home as she said she did have visions of him just being past from pillar to post :(, but I can safely say he is going nowhere :)
 
Mollie was 17 when I got her, and after a year I tried to trace her past.

I managed to find a couple of people from her past and hers is a really, really sad story. It looks like she was pretty much unloved and neglected a lot of her life. :( She'd also had a horrific accident about 10 years ago which left her traumatised.

It made me cry, but also made me understand why she's the way she is, and be determined Mollie will never be allowed to go through bad times again.
 
Out of our 11 horses im in contact with all bar 3 of the previous owners, i also try & keep in touch with new owners if possible as well, Sam who bought my little Welsh cob from me actually posts on here as well, i love seeing updates on how hes doing, shes had him around 4 years now.
Ive usually look old owners up in the passport & give them a call if ive managed to find their numbers. Most have been really pleased to here from me. The girl who used to own my old chap was chuffed to bits to here from me & we keep in touch via Facebook, shes sent me some lovely pics of him when he was younger & out competing.

I am also in contact with the breeder of my 3 miniatures as spend some time at her farm a few times a year the problem is I keep seeing more I like!! I have promised myself I will not buy another one this year.:D

unfortunalty I thought I had more info on my boy but his passport only has 1 registered owner and she couldnt of had him long as I bought him in August from my vet and this lady registered him in July :S I've tried finding him on all the sales but no luck! I've facebooked (stalked) this lady that is registered and messaged her so hopefully she will shed some light!

his pasport name is Shriocco's Life if anyone knows my boy :) He's got quite a famouse dad race horse Shirocco.


Please say other people stalk their horses past ;):o

I would love to hear my girls past history just no idea where to start I only have postcode and surname in passport
The girl I bought her from doesn't seem to want to stay in touch for some reason my girl has the nicest of natures obviously was well loved along the way.

If i ever bred I'd want to know how they're getting on! MY mum did same as you bought Shona from acouple who got her from sales and she came with a note that they had necer bothered reading and it was the preious owners saying to ring when someone gets her!

Awww that's a lovely nice ending! it's nice to explain their behavioural challenges sometimes ;)

google? that's what I did, I did name and county and she appeared!
 
I got in contact with my girl's breeder on Facebook. It was nice to hear a little abbout her as a foal, and also about her Dam and Sire. I have also since met her Sire, which was lovely!

I also keep in contact,again via facebook, with the people I bought her from. They are small time dealers, buying a few from ireland now and then.

The only bit I am missing is between the breeder and last owner before me. I think she had two owners in this time (going from her passport and info from her breeder) - one down South, and one in Ireland. I would love to get in contact with them as in this time she had a foal, which is registered with the ID society and was broken. It would be great to know how she was to start, any issues or quirks etc they found with her! I am tempted to write to the Irish owners, as they are in her passport. Not sure about the man who bought her from the breeder as they reckoned he was a bit mad!
 
When I bought my girl (now 14) I moved her to a livery yard directly opposite the yard where she had been bred and where she lived till I bought her. After 2 years we moved onto the yard where she was bred and we were there until last year. Now we are only 10 mins away from that place and we still ride in their arena and her breeder/yo is a good friend.
 
I bought a 14.3 arab mare, from some one, She had just sold her daughter (7 yrs). the mare was a 11.
she came with loads of paper work, what she had done, and a letter from prvious owner.
asked person i bought her from if she would fill out transfer of ownership papers, and she said to speak to last owner as she was still registered keeper.
I wrote to previous owner, telling her i had bought her old mare, she phoned me in tears she had GIVEN this woman her and her daughter, to be kept together, as she could no longer keep them. 6 months later they were both sold! without tack as well, the old lady had also given the woman every thing tack rugs the lot!
Still in touch with old lady, destiny was put to sleep last year due to a serious infection in her legs (4 weeks of 3 diff types of anit-b, stiil couldnt walk) aged 20.

If her computer hadn't been attacked by a virus, I would've had 6mth old photos... I was slightly gutted about that! With him being 4, I got the whole story back to where he was bred. I also got a few snippets that the guy I'd bought him off left out. Always useful!
 
Yes, I bought a pony in 1979 and kept in touch with his breeder until she died (pony only died last year). She had done a marvellous job with him and when he left her at 4 he was set up to succeed really.

However, I did acquire an old broodmare on lease and eventually bought her in her mid 20s to give her a retirement and tracked down her breeder. They were not the slightest bit interested to hear about her and the two foals she bred for me. She was a wonderful mare, lived on to 30 and I still me her now.
 
I'm another one trying to find my brave pants so I can Facebook my boy's owner-before-last. My problem is that I haven't bonded with him yet and he won't let me catch him, so I don't really want to admit that to her! But my Mum looks after him and adores him so maybe I should send the message and focus on that?

I also have his breeder's details so I may write to them at some point, too.

I'm lucky enough to have only sold one before, and she lives pretty much next door to mine now anyway so I can see her if I want to :)
 
I contacted previous owners of one of my old horses and 2 contacted me back. One was his breeder and the other JETHRO!!! (The commedian from cornwall!)
 
My daughter is on FB with both her ponies old owners, we have been to a few shows etc where they are also competing etc - they're both 2 hours away in opposite directions, so the old owners have had the opportunity for a little ride too - we've had both 3 years now. Always seem pleased to see their old ponies, but I suspect the ponies are a tad indifferent!
