What is your horses workload, how often do you ride a week [typically in the Winter]? And how is this balanced with your horses turn out? Do you find your horse hots/sharpens up if not turned out regulary?

I try and ride at least 4 times a week, be that a mixture of hacking , schooling and the odd lesson. Now turn out is a little restricted and the usual routine is twice a week for third of a day. This seems to work well for us. However she felt rather sharp over Christmas because I dont think she got any turn out and with my confidence doing a bunk hasnt been ideal

If mine doesn't get to go out she generally is worked harder, she is the same tempremant whatever i.e. generally laid back and lazy but when she explodes she explodes. ATM she's out couple of times a week and ridden 6 days a week medium work

Corroy gets worked 6 days a week, unfortunately I have to school for 5 of those, I have a lesson on a Saturday and a jumping lesson in the week. I try to compete about twice a month. She gets turned out most days, depending on the weather from about 1-4.

All ours are still out 24/7 (amazingly!) and i try to ride Blue for around 30-45mins 5 or 6 days a week, he was kept in 24/7 for a few days last winter when the yard was too icy and he was a little fresh when i rode him after that!

I try to hack out both Saturday and Sunday and keep my schooling/lunging to 3 times a week after work when it's dark. He goes out during the day in summer (often out 3/4 night a week as well) but in the winter our turnout is limited. Though this year they were still out up to the end of last week for a few hours each day. Yes he gets a little more fresh if he's kept in for a few days with nothing but rather than ride straight away I'll try and turn him out (even in the school) for an hour or so first so he gets most of it out of his system.

My mare is in at night out in the day and only stays in during the day if the weather is really bad. I mainly work evenings so have the day to ride. I generally have one lesson a week, one comp and hack out 3/4 times.

Turnout every day, 8.00 - 4.00 and ridden 3 times during the week (weather depending) and at the weekends.

Out 24/7 in the summer.

My horse is normally worked 6 days a week atm 2 hacks, 1 lunge, 1 jumping, 1 dr lesson & 1 general schooling. On weekends that I compete one of the hacks will be dropped. Once we get nearer the eventing season she will probably get lunged once more (but still have one day off).
Unfortunately I get no turnout from around October until April/May time !

Mine is out usually about 7 am to 6pm, I generally lunge twice during the week (20mins a time), school once or twice (try to do one flat/one jump but run out of time some weeks!)(for between 20 mins and an hour depending what we are doing). Lessons are generally during week for flat so would fit in instead of a flat schooling session, jumping tends to be weekend because I travel to RC clinic or my instructor's yard. Weekends he always hacks at least once then if not competing or lesson the other day, hack again.
He is a complete nightmare if not turned out daily, just so hyper, and he has no concentrates in his feed at all as it is, just fibre!

Tia is ridden 5/6 times a day. T/O time is exactly the same as summer 9.30-5
smile.gif
The only thing that changes is what work we do - schooling is upped during the winter and we hack more during the summer.

work load is different week to week right now due to still not having a school & in the middle of moving yards, he normally does at least 4 days & is turned out every day for at least 6 hours.

I try to ride both horses at least 4 times a week- normally its if/when i have a half day, or a late start.
Through the week, they go out at 7.45 and then come in at 3- Solo usually suffers from terrible mud fever, but as yet, this hasn't made an appearance. *touches wood*
At the weekend/on a Friday, they'll stay in til i've ridden both- its usually 10 by then. They'll come n at 3 today.

Current turnout is 9-5.30ish, but it is weather dependent, so they can stay in for a few days at a time.

If Meg is in then I always ride, and I aim to ride 5 days a week, but it may be more or less if it's raining. I school through the week for 30-45 mins, and hack out for at least an hour at the weekend.

Unfortunately

nothing seems to sharpen Meg up, not even being without turnout for a week, riding in the wind, or upping her oat level

With other horses I've noticed a marked deterioration in their behaviour between Dec - March when they've had limited turnout.

I tend to ride 3 or 4 times a week in the winter depending on my time and work load. My boy gets a minimum of 12 hours turnout all year round so he is always the same to ride regardless. Saying that he can still be sharp but that is just him. I tend to hack him for between 3 and 6 miles each time and this is being built up so that by the spring he will be doing this mostly at a trot pace to keep him fit and get his weight down as much as possible for the better grass months.

My horse goes out for 3 - 4 hours into a smallish pen every other day over the winter as we have very little grazing. On the days she is in she gets worked, and I try to lunge her on the days she goes out too but don't always get the time.
My pony is out every other day but as I can't ride her (too small) her exercise is normally walking out in hand. Coz I'm only there in the dark during the week on the days when the horse is out she goes into the horse stable so she has more room to walk around

The pony is good whatever but if my mare doesn't get a buck and a roll in every couple of days she becomes very hard to handle.

Mine is ridden about 4-5times a week, normally 2 hacks and then schooling/jumping, and gets turned out from about 7.30 until 4.30 everyday, except weekends, were hacking normally eats into his turnout time!!

Mine is out daily from 6.30am till 6.30pm

I ride 6 days a week usually, and tend to just grab him from the field and ride straight after lunch on mondays, weds and fridays as I work mornings then evenings, on thursday he usually has either a jump lesson/clinic. Sat or sun he tends to have an outing. He gets tuesdays off as I work solid all day and no daylight left.

I prefer to ride him after he has been out for a few hours as he is a little better behaved

He doesn't have any turnout time at all at the moment. He gets lunged every morning during the week by the grooms and then he is normally ridden 5-6 times a week plus lunging and at the wknds I try and hand graze him for 45 mins.

Well, his workload has dropped right off and he's only ridden Saturday & Sunday now. He does get turned out for as long as poss every day so gets a chance to stretch his legs but to say he's been a bit fresh is an understatement!

Mine are out 24/7 (except the old shetland who comes in at night) all year round. Only time they come in is if they have an event early the next day so need to be plaited up night before etc. Both mine are sharper to ride if they've been in just overnight! So I hate to think what they'd be like if they were kept in all the time like a lot of other peoples seem to be - I dont honestly think they'd cope (and I wouldnt make them)!

Right now, I have 0 riding. I dont have an arena, only paddocks to ride in so when and how often I ride is ALL down to ground conditions! Right now, the field is covered with snow... I do usually SJ most weekends though which gets them out and they seem to keep themselves fit enough for it on their own luckily.

Mine goes out everyday 7am to about 3.30-4pm. His temprement doesn't change if he doesn't go out ie. he's not fizzy, but he's really pi**ed off and narky to handle if he doesn't go out.

He's having a bit of a break at the moment so is ridden about once a week. Last winter he was ridden 6 days a week and was hunting fit.

Winter turnout is from about 7:30am-5:30pm every day and in overnight. Summer he lives out 24/7.

He normally gets sulky if he doesn't go out and believe it or not but he is worse if he stays in for no apparent reason but not as bad if he is lame, has farrier etc.

He normally gets worked 5/6 times a week - jumping lesson once a week, schooling at least once, normally one competition a week and gets lunged once a week. He is a lot fresher if I don't ride for a couple of days.

Both of mine are out from about 7am to about 7pm at night, unless the other horse in their field is out (usually couple times a week), in which case they get brought in for me at about 4.30pm. At weekends they are out from about lunchtime to 4.30/5ish.

One is not doing anything right now as I cant keep them both in work during winter, and the other is ridden 4/5 times a week and goes on the horse walker 2/3 times. I hack out at weekends (come rain or shine!!) for at least hr and a half/2 hrs sat and sun and then school after work for usually about 40 mins - she's only 4 though so we tend not to do any longer and i always try and vary it as much as possible with poles etc to keep her interested. We have a 30 min lesson every other sat in which case we will usually go for a plod round the farm afterwards for 30 mins.

Because of work commitments and having to travel a lot she usally gets a break of about 2/3 days every other week which seems to keep her fresh and interested in her work
smile.gif

She's out from about 8am/8.30am until anywhere between 5pm and 7.30pm depending on what time I (or the owner of her field mate) get to the yard to get her in.

When I am strict with myself she gets work 4-5 times a week in winter, but did have 2 weeks off over Xmas. I don't find she hots up but I do find she gets stroppy, as if to say "well you haven't ridden me for 3 days, why should I have to behave and concentrate now?", if she's not ridden most days.

Mine is out 24/7 all weathers
smile.gif

Ridden sat/sun usually schooling or competing, hacks out about twice a month. If i have time I try and lunge in the pessoa one night in the week and have one evening lesson two weeks of the month too. Sounds quite random when i look at it but it works
smile.gif

Over the course of a month he'll have 4 lessons, compete three times and hack once/twice.

Mine doesnt get turnout really. He has half an hour or so turned loose in the smallest indoor arena every day. In addition to that, he gets an hour on the horse walker and then I ride about 6 days a week for an hour.

He gets walked out to graze in hand and from spring, he'll get an hour or so in the fields most days, but that wont be until april.

He copes well but he does need working to keep him sane.

With mine, its not so much about the amount he works but more the mental aspect of it i think. He had a few moments just after christmas where he was being a little sod but he'd not been worked enough so it was completly my fault.

Hes been back in consistent work for a week now and i can feel it already as he was sooo lazy today

Currently Tyler is turned out between 07.30 until 15.30 every day.

I try to school him 3x times a week with hacking once a week. During the summer it usally ends up 3 x hacking a week and 3x schooling a week. the schooling is a mixture of canter work, flatwork and jumping.

I have owned Tyler for 10 months and I am starting to discover he is coming out of his shell and if not turned out and excercised first he isnt a happy bunny. He seems to prefer to stretch his legs first by himself.

He is generally OK if not turned out, (which so far has only been Christmas Day), but can get a bit excitable.
