My OH has a background in carpentry and after seeing the frankly ridiculous prices showjumps go for,he's looking into and is sure he make them for less.

So....

What would be your ideal set of showjumps?

We've discussed poles, wings, fillers etc but would you want anything else?

would you want wooden poles?

do you think wooden showjumps have had their day?

would you want holes for cups or the safety cups?

Any ideas, feedback would be greatfully recieved!

Thank you

We tried making some jump wings out of wood, they look very nice but keep falling over in the sand school, a little bit of wind and they are over, I think that is because they are on the unlevel sand more than anything.

We use the plastic ones now but they don't go up very high.

I like the wooden poles tho, they are £9 to buy unpainted here.

I won't get jump wings unless they have integral cups now - they're too easy to lose and other people dont take care of them. If they're built in it solves the problem

For use in an arena I prefer to use stands rather than wings as they take up less room and are lighter to move. Happy to use plastic or wooden but if wooden would want them with the keyhole track to take the FEI style safety cups.

Plastic poles with wooden inserts (so they are the same weight as traditional pole) are very nice as maintenance free but are twice the price so I tend to stick with traditional wooden poles.

I've made jumps with both wings & stands & they are easily & cheaply made. The stands certainly are lighter to handle & take less room to store. I used the below cups as they are very sturdy & can be adjusted one handed. The stands/wings I've made will cater for jumping up to around 1.30/1.40 .

As for poles I used wooden ones, they have the weight in them that plastic ones don't have & encourage the horse to pick his feet up. Plastic poles & stands/wings are very nice, maintenance free but far too expensive for the majority of us. Fillers & water trays again are easy to build. Anyone with a few tools & very basic diy knowledge should have no problem building as many as they need.
