Your largest vet bill so far?

For a single bill- £1200. Suspected broken knee that turned out to be more of a crack/dent in the bone than a true fracture. Another positive experience claiming with NFU- they were wonderful.

Ouch at the 40k Perissa!

Shils you still have the edge over me

I think I'm still winning (or losing ) with around £9k

But this...
I stopped counting when it went past 40K

Mine is a bit over £8k for annular ligament surgery at the beginning of this year and I'm now feeling it was a bargain.

Still discussing it with the insurance company as that leg was excluded because of a previous injury, I'm not expecting them to pay up really.

And yes. the mare is worth every penny of it to me and I'd do it again even though she's 'only' a happy hack now.

Mine is 10K for emergency surgery on a sunday night to remove a 2" diameter bone chip after the young and reckless CB (who still fancied himself as a stallion) got kicked by one of the mares. It included an emergency callout to the yart and 10 days as an in patient at Liphook and numerous X-Rays too.

This was 10 years ago, so god knows how much it would cost now!

Fortunately Pet Plan paid the bill by return of post after a chat with the Vet, before they had even had my claim paperwork..

Mine was just over £3500 for my pony's infected lateral cartilage to be removed after he had regional perfusion that didn't work. He's ok now.

current horse 6500k on one problem (tendon and foot problem related according to insurce!!)) but in total for the nearly 3 years i have had her got to be near 11/12k?? inc. Kick, Colic, Allergic reaction, scratched eye, arthritc back (on going!) and a fall on knees! not bad as most of thesse were in last 18 months. my insurance company hate my horse!

£10.5k and worth every penny! Pony had a broken leg which needed plating and then metal work needed removing as infection set in. He was a perfect patient and 5 years on is as fit as a fiddle. Thank god for insurance, savings and a very understanding OH!

If we are on about a single bill then £1500 from bone scan, £600 for tildren plus £300 for her colic she had afterwoods. Not covered by insurance this time around about to have it again.

In past year over 10k on her lameness and blood tests etc also ulcers

Bloody hell! I thought £150 was enough, pony shall now be wrapped in cotton wool :p failing that I'll have to find myself a rich OH in case of a horse related emergency :D

hahahaaaa. Luckily I have found rich OH cos I/he has just paid €4000 for a mare who spent 24 days in the clinic with 2 operations due to colic. Insurance for horses here is non existent. Thanks hubby:)

personally my biggest was £2000 for lami treatment in 2003, then £900 for a fractured leg.

But my families biggest vet bill to date was for my sisters SJ when her one of her hocks was shattered in a freak accident two years ago. She will never SJ again and so far it has cost £10,000 through various operations and medications etc and then anther £2000 because they bought a horsebox to run her up and down to newmarket each month. Personally I wouldn't have spent that on the mare but my sister wanted to give her every chance. I honestly never thought she'dever come field sound let alone be ridden again. The damage has left her very twisted down her spine and legs, infact she is almost 'banana' shaped through her spine too.

Mine was 2.5k and if I could go back in time id have the horse pts, id only had it a week when it got kicked in the field and severed its tendon sheath at the back of its pastern, I took a huge gamble with my own money as was not insured, there was no guarantee that the horse would ever be sound again, I persevered for 3yrs and had it competing as an allrounder but it was never right in the head

Fudges bill for his tendon injury was over £6000, the previous injury cost me £2500, £1200 was not covered by the insurance.

In addition to this over the two inuries in 2 years he has cost nearly £3000 in addition bedding, hay, job service, transport, supplements and state of the art electric fencing for pen turnout only.

Is it any wonder I have a huge credit card bill!!

All told, about 10K on my dog who had meningitis (6k on insurance) we now live in a box under a tree and drink meths:D but the Setter is wonderfully well:D

£9,500

Injury to pastern and hoof, shattered pedal bone

A clean up job, wire hoof together and a cast, drugs for 18 days, and we lost her.

And no its not paid yet its massively in dispute as they quoted £5000 for surgery and 4 weeks hospitalisation!

Largest vet bill so far was for one of my pet goats who suddenly developed a blocked ureathra, he was referred to RVC immediatley. Initially they fitted a catheter in his side to allow the urine to drain whilst they tried for 3 weeks using drugs/minor procedures to unblock his ureathra, this was without sucess.

After three weeks they said it just wasnt working so Mike Archer who was handling his case gave me two options, PTS or trying pioneering reconstructive surgery.

I decided to go for the surgery as he was only young and fine and well in himself apart from the blockage. The surgery which was successful but he suffered heart failure in recovery and they just could not get him back :(

Total cost for everything at RVC was around 6,000GBP and he was not insured....ouch!

For my horse the largest single vets bill was for Laminitis is 2003, over 4,000 but was covered by insurance

I'm in NZ so the actual figure will seem irrelevant, but my bill for the injury my new horse got half an hour after I got her is already twice what I paid for her, and I haven't recieved the second half of the bill yet. I got her as a six-month training project for sale, but looks like I'll be keeping her to get my money's worth since I've over-capitalised and won't make my money back on her now, no matter how well she trains up :( Ah well, I wouldn't have horses if I liked money!

One of most expensive was £7000 on a newfoundland with pneumonia on boxing day night. Including trips to liphook as she is too big to be treated by normal vets!
An ongoing cost of about £10000 for her skin and eyes she is 4 and a half. Needless to say her insurance has just gone up from 50 to 150 a month :o but it is worth it i guess as she may need elbow replacement in future...
Horses most expensive so far is about £900
