Your most embarassing horse-handling injuries!

A few years ago, teaching a group kids lesson, moved onto cantering. One child nervous but up for having a go, so I ran with her. Was 'cantering' alongside shetland telling child how brill she was doing and how I wouldn't let go, when my legs got tangled and I ended up flat on my back in middle of the school!! Got up panicking about child as I really didn't want to ruin any confidence she was building, to see her stopped at back of the ride, huge smile telling me she could do it all by herself now!!

And all the parents collapsed in laughter from their viewpoint!!!!

I got on very well with all my clients and any parents, luckily enough lol!!!!!!!!

Oooh, and, being very proud of my mare day before yesterday, when doing ride and lead with the shetland. We managed a canter, all going well when in front of a group of work men, she decides she doesn't like the shetland getting nose just in front of her shoulder. So she swung right, so Shetland, like the good lead pony he is turned with her, so she swung further. I end up in fast canter going round and round in circles out of control in the middle of a school playing field much to the amazement of the work men who all stopped to watch. Took me a while to gather the shetland up, pull him backwards with one hand and try to pull the mare up with the other. When we did stop, shetland got in front, turned to face mare who decided to started reversing, with me kicking ten bales of the proverbial out of her. If she's just walked forward the shetty would have turned alongside and all would have been well lol!

I didn't return along that route!!!!

And the best one. Working at a riding school, all the girls were about 16 / 17 years old. Someone got pregnant blah blah, boss decided to give us a sex education chat. In the lecture room at lunchtime, with the head girl hiding behind a clipboard wetting herself laughing.

Boss was very male, very scary dutchman. And also quite embarrassed I think.

Never laughed so hard in all my life, but it was quite excrutiating to sit through!!!! Bless him though, he always had our best interests at heart!!! :D

During the easter hols I was helping at my RS. As I stood on the yard, holding this mare, shoe CHOMPED down on my backside and I jumped in the air! So embarrassing :o

This one isnt horsey, but I work on a city farm and went into the large chicken pen to shoo the chooks inside for the night. I'm face to face with this HUUGE cockerel, who then decided to attack me, claws and all. Of course I let out an almighty scream, Farm manager has to come and rescue me, I still feel horrendously embarrassed!!

There's so many...

About a year ago, was leading my pony down the side of the stables when a horse at the front of the block which was being shod stepped back and got her foot stuck in the farrier's tray on wheels thing they have...cue the most horrendous noise of tools and shoes and nails flying about on concrete and the metal trays being flung about. My pony went from 0-60mph in a millisecond, I was pulled off my feet, flew for a while like Superman horizontally alongside him before landing on the concrete and being dragged a foot or so before my tiny brain got into gear and actually let go of the leadrope.

A matter of months later my broom had fallen down outside the stable and handle was wedged under open stable door, even though I'd seen it and successfully stepped over it once, on second time into the stable I got my toe wedged under the broom handle and once again perfected my flying technique.

Talking to someone and looking left whilst opening the car boot to change out of my wellies at the yard I brought the car boot up onto my forehead...

Getting my horse in from the field. 1 horse barges into the back of mine. Horse jumps forward and because I was halfway putting headcollar on and in front of my horse, he knocked me over and I pulled him forward on top of me...

He had one knee between my legs, one on my chest and slid me along the ground. I had a polycotton t shirt on and ended up with a grazed eye, chest and BEEEEG open seeping wound on my back about waistband level!

The problem was that I hadn't had my horse long. Parents were TOTALLY against the idea even though I had been riding since age 6 etc. They are totally non horsey and TERRIFIED of enduring even more years of accidents and mayhem! LOL

The "obvious" wounds I could kinda explain. "Con caught me and knocked me" etc. I managed to hide the one on my back, even though it was weeping for about a week. Mom caught sight of the mark / scar when I was in the bath months later, by which time I had forgotten about it! Her comment was along the lines of "what the hell is that?" (hinting on what would have been impossible as at the time I did not have a boyfriend etc) I was totally mortified. Took ages to convince her otherwise, but still didn't (and to this day wouldn't) tell her the actual happening!!! Sooooooo Embarrassing!

Also a while ago ..
my mate came to watch me jump my horse shes a really novice jumper and she still jumping smaller jummps compared to me so i was going around the corner and my horse noticed her walking up the path and forgot to look a the jump my horse stop then leaped i went off the side and under got galloped over - thats was so embassing i was trying to show how jumping big is so much funner but it failed lol the one time that she watches lol :L
but i did get back on and jump horsey again

I was walking with a friend down the field with as she went to turn her horse out. He heard something behind him and spund round to look, unfortunately his back side connected with mine. This was clearly a scary thing  so he bucked, he's foot caught me and lifted me off my feet and dumped me on my butt at the side of the path. Down a small ditch, in a load of stinging nettles. I couldnt put my hands down in the nettles to lift myself up, my friend was laughing to hard to help and hold on to horse at the same time so another girl who was walking down behind us had to haul me out.
I got up to the yard filled up a large water bucket and sat there with my arms in the water, i had stings all up them, all over my back and some on my legs. Oh a nice hoof print on my backside :D

I forgot the rule that the smallest pony on the yard is always the craftiest, so she got away from me in the stable, charged out the (shut but not bolted) door, down to her field, back, across the road () and to a corner where I (v stupidly by this point) thought I could catch her by mane alone. Cue next bolt about the yard, and me flat on back. All in front of my new boss, who I had worked for for all of 2 days :o

I once dismounted after dressage, fell onto my bottom, and in the process of dismounting clumsily all the buttons off my new jacket scattered everywhere. Gutted

I also quite often trip or fall over really small things, like a small patch of raised grass, and do slow-mo falls, not hurting myself, but frequently amusing the horse who I am supposed to be leading at the time! :o

When I was younger I used to ride a little coloured mare with a terrific buck. Real handstands, and she used to have me off fairly regularly. By the time I was 14 though I'd got pretty good at sitting through them and thought I'd got it nailed. It was worth putting up with them because she had a fantastic jump, was fast and could turn on a sixpence, so she was unbeatable in a jump off.

On this particular day we were having a lesson out on the xc course, I was feeling fairly happy as I knew she'd jump anything on the course, and was never spooky. We'd jumped the nasty level change and a few others and came round to do a sequence of brushes and log piles. When she put in an almighty buck, and carried on bucking, I'm not quite sure what happened but I ended up face down in a ditch full of nettles.

I was stung quite literally ALL OVER! Even my face, the stings had gone through my jodhs, and my gloves. It was awful. And I had to go to a family party later that day :o

I turned my mare out a few summers ago and the other mare she was with who was absolutely evil ran over and attacked her in the gateway. Aniseed had nowhere to go other than through me so she knocked me flat on my face and ran over the top of me, kicking me in the back of the head in the process. Thankfully I didn't get knocked out so just sat on the other side of the fence for a while bawling my eyes out in complete shock. Mustered the strength to walk back to the yard and there was no-one there other than a friend of the YO. Poor guy must have wondered what was going on when I appeared puffy eyed with dirt and blood running out of my mouth from where I had literally bitten the dust and a lump the size of an egg on my head.

Aniseed is also very nosey and can't be left on her own if there is anything in reaching distance. I was once stood chatting to the farrier when she managed to somehow hook the top of his metal tripod under the headcollar noseband whilst he was doing one of her front feet. Cue me running over in slow motion trying not to startle her and hoping to catch it before it fell off. She wasn't in the slightest bit bothered!

Not as such embarrasing as only me n mum there but was plaiting up for dressage at trailblazers champs. my horse is 17.1hh so pretty hard to reach forelock, cue mum trying to keep him interested to keep his head half down and me standing on bucket in front of him. Unfortunately he is v.nosey and obcviously thought he was missing something when he suddenly pulled head up and caught me right in the privates with his nose almost sending me flying! now i know how men feel! i honestly did not know what 2 do with myself!

Where to start well we got into a good routine leading mare and foalie to the field which was about 10 yards from the stable a week into this foalie bless him decides he was unable to wait for me to let go runs over the top of me catching my leg, trips me in the mud, splat face down, i get up hes bouncing around wacks me in the nose. So now the yard owner turns up round the corner to see me covered in mud and blood pouring from my face:o:o Luckily for once i had a change of clothes ready for work....
I was loading a horse for competition fine first one up next who had a slight problem in would go up fine but then spin and fly off down the ramp! so 2nd go up we go again horse spins round takes off down the ramp in the process of the of spinning stands on my foot. (No I do not have large feet though sometimes i wonder!) somehow i fall over get dragged down the ramp rolling with horse panicking as the trainer and owner turn up (oh how professional do i look on my back being dragged down the yard!!) Well i guess it worked because he was not a problem again hmmmmm...
There is lots of other ones like the time i was showing a friend my horse at lunchtime, leaning on the gate she comes over at a full gallop stops turns takes off yes it was muddy in the gateway but not nearly as muddy as i was:(

Got bit on the bum! Daughter decided to vault on pony I was grooming without warning me - and to register his displeasure he turned sharp and bit me - tore a very expensive pair of jeans in the process - lessons learned all round! :o
