...Quite a few years ago me & my cousin decided to take my sec D and the shetland for a walk/some grass. We got to a friends field and decided it would be much easier to sit on them whilst they munched away - i thought id get on the shetland. Next thing i know, shetland is pegging it down a hill and i have no control whatsoever, crying with laughter because of ponies legs going like the clappers and i just slide off the side at the bottom of the hill. Pony stops and to grab a bit of grass then proceeds in walk back to where my sec d is waiting

years ago when i was 13, this boy me and my couisn knew would always come and watch y=us jump. on the sly he would raise our jumps when we came back to jump them, well all was going well and then it cam to my couisn and she went to jump she came flying of the front of the horse over his neck and took not just the reins but the bridle with her, poor horse mouth. thank god she was grand and horse was grand, but i never laughed as much in my life, boy felt awful as he raised jump on her, we had him eating out of our hands for a month.
me on the other hand omg wait for this, i was home alone well my uncle but he was watching tv, as mum went to colect my brother just from school, she left me with my uncle but sure he was useless so i was really on my on, she said not to go out to horse till she gets home, well i thought great now noone here i will get to have my 1st gallop as our ones wouldnt let me as i was still learning from them. well cut long story short, got on pony all going great thinking i was class galloping round field when i was woming up our field towards the road, and the pony wouldnt slow (i could gallop just didnt know how to stop from a gallop) came to the wall and i jumped of and rolled down the hill, (so i jump not fell but still funny) i was in pain and seen 2 girls i really didnt like comng home from school, so i got up as quick i went down and wee pony had just ran to my side, they asked was i ok but i was mortified more than anything, had a sore back for 4 days. well i learned my lesson and of course mum and dad killed me and my uncle as he was ameant to be minding me.
so still havent lived it down now 28

Probably the three falls I had in one day at camp this year...one in a sj lesson and 2 in xc!! One in a ditch!

I held (and probably still do) the record for the highest number of falls at my Pony Club, so I have many to choose from...
The one that springs to mind was at Cheltenham Racecourse in 2001. We were part of the Area show jumping team, and on the day everything went to pot. Our pathfinder jumped the wrong course, our second rider managed to knock up an incredible 52 faults (two stops, zillions of knockdowns and time penalties) and our third rider missed a fence out. Then there was me...Ellie ground to a halt at Fence Three, right opposite the collecting ring, and I went over her head in slow motion, with my massive, teddy-bear-knickers-clad backside sticking up for all to see as I vainly tried to stay on. Worst of all, the boy I fancied like crazy was stood in the collecting ring watching me

I think every fall is embarrassing but 2 stand out most for me!
Where I used to work as a RI I was escorting a hack of 4 riders. We we had just had a lovely canter and were walking casually down a country lane having a natter. My horse spooked and I just plopped off the side in a very undignified fashion. The worst thing was I was riding a big 16.3 hh mare who was not great and standing still and I could not get back on! So had to lead her the remaining mile or so
My most recent was when I took my youngster out. We were walking back along the road to the stables and a line of cars were trying to overtake, we got to a narrow part and because the line of cars were still coming I tried to pull over to let them through and my horse though " sod that" and span round, reversed across the road, lost his back legs in the very large ditch and I slid off his back end!
I landed like a beetle on its back in the bottom of this ditch over 6 feet deep. I clambered out and about 10 cars watched me struggle out of the ditch covered in brambles grass mud etc.

I am not sure if anyone witnessed my fall but it still makes me feel a little embarrassed even now and it was about 21 years ago now - I was riding my fabby mare out on a hack, we were crossing over a little wooden footbridge over a ditch and she was walking very close to the edge for some reason - anyhow, around the corner someone slammed a car door shut which caused her to spook and fall off the bridge into the ditch! I have no idea what happened as it was so fast but the next thing I remember is being squished into the ditch with my horse sitting in my lap!
I will never forget that moment of utter silence and stillness as we both tried to figure out what had just happened. She then started to haul herself out of the ditch and I was left to try and unstick myself from the thick mud - neither of us was hurt, but we were stung to buggery with nettle stings. I got back on and rode to a mates house and she hosed us both down withe the garden hose!

One of my many emabarrasing falls was when I went for a hack with a few friends one evening after work to somewhere where we shouldnt really have been hacking.
We all went off into canter, and from nowhere my mare decided to throw in a few bucks.
I dont know what happened after this as I was knocked unconcious. The first thing I remember was waking up in the ambulance which was carting me off to hospital!!
Apparently, my mare, after dumping me, then gallopped off home!!!

When we were trotting around the arena my "fabulous" pony spooked at something in a hedge, galloped off across the school, performed the most enormous buck, and ditched me face first into the sand.

Many many embarassing falls, but the most embarassing ones of all were:
Getting picked up 3 times in the space of 4 weeks by the same ambulance crew, I think on the last 'pick up' the comment was made 'wouldn't you be better taking up knitting love' I think A & E were going to give me a loyalty card

Back when we had the RS we used to choose ponies by standing behind the dealers wagon going "can we have that one it's cute?" leading to some very pretty, but rather unsuitable for beginners ponies.
One of these was Jack, a little cobby 13hh thing, who used to buck the entire way around the school in trot. The first time we tried him, i'd just got back from riding Herc and wandered round to the school and got on. I sat to every single buck, even when he put in a big one. Unfortunately it had caused the saddle to slip up his neck. So I pulled him up, and got off....Getting my leg caught on the back of the saddle and rather gracefully landing in a heap on the floor.
The best part - He'd timed the buck well enough so that when I stopped we were smack bang infront of the seating area, where practically everyone who'd been on the yard was sat watching. With the exception of one person, who heard the laughing and walked round to fill a net, and with out looking came out with "lucy's just fallen off hasn't she"

I`ve fallen off so many times, I used to get faller of the week on all my riding holidays
best has to be when i was riding my old horse bareback going through a forest and i didnt see the low hanging branch whilst turning round to talk to my friend....i met the floor pretty quickly
My oh had the best fall recently...at a standstill!!!!!! he had his not usual riding jeans on and he needed a wee , he went to dismount and i guess he didnt have enough stretch in the jeans so his leg caught on the back of the saddle and he just fell landing in a foetal position and didnt move for ages...i was weak laughing and Roxy turned round to look at him on the floor as if to say ' you PRAT' was hilarious!

Now that's ambitious!I was on a 14.1hh Highland cross, wrangling a spring spaniel!

After I had done it I sat there wandering just where I had left my common sense! Thank you for being so generous with your discription of my plonkerish behaviour!
Why is it that on the ponies/ horses you just know are going to be trouble you pay attention and yet on the ones who are better mates than your lover you go completely stupid and do things that actually you just know are dumb????!!!

It was only a couple of months ago, I was getting on and as I went to swing my leg over, pony spooked and jumped forward, unbalanced me and I toppled over the other side hurt like anything though, I landed on concrete onto my elbow and had to go to hospital because everyone though I'd broken it. Very, very embarrassing!!

Years ago at my RS I used to ride this extremely lazy cob called Sophie. She was gorgeous but really, really bone idle and could grind to a halt from canter if you stopped using your legs for a second.
Anyway, I was learning to jump and I approached a cross pole on Sophie, kicking all the way. She jumped the fence nicely, but as I went over the fence I must have let up using my leg for a second, because she landed and stopped dead, leaving me sitting halfway up her neck.
Now this was a bit of a habit of mine and I was quite adept at wriggling myself back into the saddle, but before I had a chance Sophie put her head to the floor, and almost in slow motion I slid down her neck like a slide and forward-rolled off over her head. Whoops.

I was on a fell and I can't remember why but my reins were really short. We hadn't even set off from the barn and pony threw his head down. I flew over his head, whilst doing a flip and landed sat on my bum in front of the pony.
Also I was grooming, slipped on a tiny bit of mud and ended up under pony looking at his belly. Its a mirical he didn't kick or stomp on me

I've got 2 moments that spring to mind. Firstly when I was at Wellington Riding, I was in their old indoor school in a jumping lesson. OK. I soon realised that the mare I was riding wasn't keen on jumping and boy did she have a 60-0 mph stop in 0.001 sec!! I fell off her twice in 5 mins, doing the 'hang around the neck' moment trying so hard to lift my leg back on top of the saddle to haul myself around. I wasn't graceful in trying and never made it, on both occassions. Not too bad really, but the cafe window people who were watching made sure I knew it was their highlight of the year!! (I attracted a crowd of about 20 - talk about promoting lessons!!)
Second moment was at camp many moons ago, riding a coloured 13.2hh called Lucky. All going SO well until I did a true thelwel style dismount head first, legs straight up in the air over the front dive into the really really smelly ditch. I had to emerge black, saw I had a crowd of people laughing so hard Iam sure some pee'd themsleves, I did a bow. A lovely bit of gunk then fell out of my top and the laughing didn't stop for a long time. That ditch has memories!!

A couple of years ago, a local racehorse trainer let me take my horse onto his gallops when I was out hacking. I had been on several times before, so this day, I decided that I didn't need to get off to close the gate because getting back on him was tricky as he was waiting for his fast work. So off I went, shortened stirrups, off his back etc, when I think he must have seen a blade of grass move. There was no hanging on the side wondering if I could get back on. I hit the ground in the space of a millisecond, lying there like a sand angel. By the time I had done that thing where you check that nothing's broken and got up, Rebel had exited the gallops and was nowhere to be seen. I attempted to sprint the last furlong to the road, looked left and right and the old git was nowhere to be seen. So I had to flag down a 4wd and ask them to drive me the way I thought horse had gone. Eventually we found him trotting towards home on the left hand side of the road, quite happily. I asked the car to stop, so that I could run after him, and when I got out of the car, I looked at the seat I had just left and there must have been a kilo of sand there. It was a lovely clean new car when I had got in!

Anyway, it's never a good look on your back in front of the judges car when you're nearly 50!!

The walk trot test would be positively speedy in comparison to my embarrassing fall. I was never going to own up in public about my departure from my 14.2 mare but the previous posts have had me laughing out loud, so perhaps my "fall" might raise a smile.
Last summer i had mounted my very round girl and of course the saddle slipped a bit. Being too lazy to get off and adjust and knowing that it would only happen again i simply put my weight into the left stirrup and rocked the saddle over. Unfortunately as i did so my foot slipped out of the stirrup and gravity and momentum just did their thing! I had time before i hit the ground to think "that was silly" and then i was flat on my back being studied by a surprised (and probably very satisfied) horse. So i am owning up to falling from my horse while she was stationary!

This is what my adopted college pony used to do to me the whole time. She'd been in a jumping home previously and gone off jumping. I started her off again and now she's happily doing jump lessons with the ND's. However this was most embarrassing when it happened on open day. Everyone else jumped clear but pip took great delight in slowly dumping me at the same fence in the same style! Everyone oooed and ahhhed but I did get a huge clap when we did finally get back on and over it . My favourite part is the last scene, yes i'm laughing not crying as some people have asked and pony in normal cheeky style has her tongue stuck out!
