I can't really see anything wrong with this food, but maybe one of you can? I'd really appreciate any comments. Thanks in advance.

I am sure someone who knows more will be along to correct me but that food looks poor.

They have put "Gluten Free, Grain Free, High Protein, Hypoallergenic" to tempt people then list vague and off putting ingredients - meat and animal derivatives (don't like the sound of that). 48% potato and then Seeds, Derivatives of Vegetable Origin - again vague.

What she said ^^ 48% potato! You’re paying for almost half of their food to be potatoes, you could cook some for less, I’m sure. And meat derivatives could mean anything. They don’t name the first meat? I’d be querying what antioxidant they’re using, hopefully not the dread BHT BHA.

Do they actually need senior food? This tends to mean less calories, addition of jolt supplements (recent studies demonstrate that glucosamine is actually useless) My 15 year old is on the same stuff he’s been on for years. Life stage food never used t9 exist. You can either reduce portion size of current food or maybe find something better quality if budget allows.

I'm becoming very suspicious of the foods that list "meat derivatives" rather than actual meat so will be moving my guys over to the csj k9 range soon as the ingredients look cleaner in this.

The biggest thing wrong with the food is that thw ingredients list does not actually tell you what's in its.
Try contacting millies wolfheart finding out what food they would recommend and look at a list of the ingredients, you want a list like theirs, personally I would feed millies wolfheart if I could.
I also agree life stage foods are a marketing gimmick, get a good food and feed a good joint supplement such as yumove.
The food that you have listed is also very expensive for what it is, I can get similar rubbish for less than half the price.

I agree that it looks poor from the ingredient list - but so is Autarky according to the dry dog food index, despite its high price tag?

I’ve got some Barking Heads for my dogs and the ingredient list is a revelation - very clear, no derivatives and the like

Just swapped myself to Barking Heads. Very pleased so far

Did you have any problems with transferring over AmyMay? I tried Hoover on the recommended 25% and he promptly got diarrhoea again (granted not unusual for him!) so I’ve re-established him again on Chappie and am now just trying adding a handful of BH to his usual food

Thank you so much for all your feedback, everyone. You've opened my eyes and I can now also see that it's not a good feed - especially considering the huge amount of spuds and them not specifying the meat for exactly what it is. Derivatives...blurghh, that could be so many nasty things. I'm not even going to enquire as to what it actually contains as I'm put right off this feed. I'll keep searching for something of better quality but still within my budget.
Thanks again.

I have to say that Skinners Duck and Rice - or Salmon and Rice - is the best reasonably priced food out there IMHO. My dogs have always looked great on it, other than the old boy who has suddenly decided to react to it

I agree with levrier, my 10 year old lab is on skinners duck and rice and looks really good on it. I think it's the best of the more economical feeds.

My vet said that senior food is not necessary for her at all, I did ask as I wondered if this was something she should be on.

No, no problem at all.

I think that a lot of owners are now copping on to the fact that companies are touting rubbish. People are starting to be a lot more discerning, although some still search out the most awful stuff despite knowing how poor it is and not the cheapest either.

not sure about that.i work in a shop and the biggest shelf space in taken up with bakers which most people buy :( second choice is probably wagg :(

That makes me sad. They’re not the cheapest, they’re absolutely appalling (IMO) and there is better out there for less. I’ve ranted at Pets at Home several times re the awful quality but they don’t appear to care about the welfare of the animals in their shop, so they clearly only care about profits.

Hey, I haven’t seen your name on here for a while: did you take a break or am I just blind? :D

Bakers is so horrible it should be banned. Where I work I try to educate people into feeding a better quality diet = more digestible= less fed = more cost effective.

We have had a 46% increase in sales of raw foods over the last 18 months, although I understand it's not ofr everyone. Eden is our best dry and getting very popular as people become more discerning...we have banned Bakers from the shelves and Pedigree is on it's way out too!!

We still keep working brands such as Skinners, Chudleys and Dr Johns as we hve many customers who swear by these and we don't want to alienate these people!

Royal Canin is my bug bear - very expensive for IMHO poor quality food....

We get a monthly allowance for the working dogs food and they were on Skinners Duck & Rice (which is an ok-ish food) but as my GSDs are doing so well on a mix of raw (breakfast) and Simpsons Premium (tea) we changed them over to Simpsons (and make up the extra cost) and they are doing so much better. They enjoy their food more, drink less than they did on Skinners, higher energy levels and glossy coats. All our dogs also get regular raw bones, chicken carcass/wings, salmon oil and raw free range eggs.

Good mews on the increased percentage of raw food sales!

Boo to Royal Canin, I dunno why so many breeders seem to use it. It too contains BHT/BHA. A girl on Petforums emailed them to ask and they confirmed it!

Just another thank you for everyone who replied. I've decided to buy Skinners Duck and Rice and they are gradually being moved onto that from their previous food. When I gave each of them a handful to see what they make of it, they both loved it! I'm so pleased about that. I'm convinced they're now getting a better quality of feed. Thanks again, especially to those who suggested Skinners.
