Your ride only...........or anyone????

LOL

I used to event my sister's horse (gelding) and he used to buck and bronc with me something dreadful (ace horse though). When she got on he was so different. She was nervous and novice and he never put a foot wrong with her. They defo know and the good ones will look after you. I also think if they know you love them (and trust me they do) then that helps too. Conversely if they know you don't like them they tend to act up IMO.

There was a brief bit in Horse and Hound a while ago about a point-to-pointer whose form improved drastically when he had girl jocks instead of men – they thought that it was because he thought he was in charge and running away with them.
It's interesting how quickly horses get the measure of humans  I've also heard of bomb-proof RDA horses who would have a break for a few weeks and be ridden by kids without disabilities, and would instantly become mischievous, challenging little sods. Back to the RDA and they were like lambs. :)

Soulful; I would of had her 2 years at the end of March and yes, she is fabby!
luckily, that although I must look like a sack of spuds up there on her I have always had stickability since childhood, or is it self pressivation? She's wonderfully schooled and responsive and I find I only have to think what I want and she will do it, she will pull up as soon as I ask and I guess she feels me slipping too:D

She's a stunning SFx and I'm fat and 50, so it's so funny when people first see me ride her. People eventally confess and have I have been told their first thoughts on seeing us at a new yard,
"She's much to much overhorsed!! And that mad thing will have her off."
Then yes, off I go, not onto the floor as expected, but hacking alone instead.:D

Elz has taught me loads and makes me look good too, that's why I would like other riders much better than me perhaps school her and maybe do some XC with her as I think she would love it.
Also, I once had visions of myself and OH sitting on a blanket, eating a picnic and watching my friend whizz round a local XC course on her.

Oh well, maybe one day?

Why not you whizzing around on her?

Honestly- if she looks after you now, maybe start going over poles and things, and then maybe some raised poles, and maybe a crosspole, and then maybe a double at some point... In hardly any time you'll be flying round courses!

Age is no barrier...

i am the only one who rides my horse

i am going to let my friend ride her (just once) but i dont think the horse will be happy about it lol

(mare)....

I think mares are sensitive anyway, some more than others, sounds like she has built a sting bond/trust with you, like they would do with any nice owner, so she perhaps feels more relaxed with you riding her, became she is content in what you ask of her, anyone else she will be naturally wary off, no matter how good a rider they are compared to you.

None of mine like agressive riders.
Fudge, seems to take a real dislike to people who think they're a bit good and has ditched a few. :D
Merlin is happy to be ridden by almost anyone from a complete novice or small child to my RI.
Very few people ride Lady as she's quite quirky and needs someone confident but sympathetic.

Oh wow that is fantastic, what a lady she is!!!

Maybe what she is saying is she would much rather you do these things with her:D

I've actually wondered about this...my ex-racer went through a phase of being a complete and utter madman. He's much better now, but still the only people to have ever sat on him are me and my instructor. I still don't know that I'd trust him with someone else, unless they were professional or good riders with me watching and him having worked for a few days solidly beforehand.

He will go for my instructor, but considering how much more experience etc she has than me...he should go much better for her. As it is, he tends to act up and has catapulted her off once in the few times she's ridden him, and I don't find he jumps courses better with her. What I will say though, is that she has more nerve than me so can make him do things that I'm wary of..though if he doesn't want to do it...getting dominant with him doesn't help in the short term so again...I'm not sure.

I'd quite like to try my other instructor on him actually, who's a lot quieter and more forgiving than my SJ instructor, and thinks a bit more like me, but is better :) I have a sneaking suspicion he'd go well for him

I think some horses are definitely "one person only" horses. Although it can depend on the type of rider. One of my boys will accept other riders, however he will test them out to see whether they are good enough to ride him by bucking when they put their leg on etc, just to see whether he can scare them or not. Also, he isn't a fan of schooling anyway but he completely refuses to work properly for anybody else but me. Also, you have to know how to sit to his bucks when out hacking and hunting and how to ride him as he isn't easy, but I will say he is an absolute star with a novice rider on him (just walking/trotting round the school on the lead rein!) and really looks after them. :) My other boy can be very nervous and if the wrong person rode him he would panic and bolt.

I think most horses can learn to except other riders, it's just finding the riders who are good enough to adapt their way of riding to your horse's way of going.

Not just mares, my lad is as good as gold for Elizabeth to ride, no problems. Will tolerate my YO or me if it is only for a short time. But is a complete a*se for anyone else. Elizabeth's AI had terrible problems when she rode him and so have other people. He is difficult and stubborn, rearing etc. As I said he will tolerate me and Yo but he is most definitely a "one person horse"

Fany is happy to be ridden by anyone.
