your shortlist of bare minimum stuff needed

for your horse...assuming food/hay/bedding etc was provided for, what would be your absolute bare minimum you would buy with a new horse.

Am just trying to prove a point here to my non-horsey mother who thinks "borrowing rugs for now" for the new horse is okay. But its not. Lots of horsey people understandably won't share - why should they, get your own stuff I say!

Shortlist away, please...I need some backing up from other horsey people! Thanks!

I am not proud though and would rather buy good quality branded second hand stuff than cheap new stuff

Grooming kit - hoof pick, dandy brush, body brush & curry, rubber curry, mane comb

Head collar and lead rope

Tack - bridle, saddle, at least two numnahs/cloths. Boot if required - I only ride with over reach boots occasionally

Longe line and whip.

That's all I have but I don't compete at the moment. When I do I will need brushing boots.

Exactly this! I completely agree re decent second hand rather than cheap new.

Did you have first aid kit on the list? (sorry i'm having a slow moment) but a basic one with Hibiscrub, gamgee, animal lintex and vet wrap - and some arnica are a must.

Personally, I never use numnahs, and rarely boots.

borrowing rugs is risky business as what happens when your horse trashed the rug? it gets ripped....its then on you to replace it!
