My horse has been diagnosed with Uveitis recently and I need to change his bedding from shavings to something more dust free. I would like your opinions and suggestions on which bedding I should use.

Thank you.
Also in New Lounge.

I use wood pellets but Im not sure I would suggest them for Uveitis. What about paper? I know it can be a pain to deal with but thats got to be less of a dust risk than most other things.

Im just really at a loss which to use. I was very happy with shavings but my boy's needs must come first. He is not a dirty horse, he is on matting too so doesn't need to be a deep bed. Just a clean and comfy one, and no dust.

I love my wood pellets but I could not guarrantee dust free - esp in summer.

For your situation I would recommend chopped straw (Sundown products or Easibed)

or Nedz bed products

or hemp (Auboise etc)

Straw is unobatainable around here at the moment so I tried soft builders' sand from the local quarry. Cheap and works well.

If your horse was happy on shavings and you were happy with him on shavings, I don't understand why you have to change? My horse came to me 4 years ago with chronic conjunctivitis in both eyes. In one eye, it flipped over into superficial keratitis and after a 6 month battle to save the eye, culminating in a tragic accident with the eye drop tube, he had to have it removed. His remaining eye still gets a nasty dermatitis round it and now and then (cold wind, flies) gets gungy again but he's on a deep litter bed of dust extracted shavings and is as happy as a pig in clover. Whatever bedding you choose will have strengths and weaknesses. Sunny's deep litter bed is fragrant and ammonia free 24/7 and that's important to lungs and eyes as well. Some bedding types aren't anywhere near as absorbent as shavings. I'd stick to shavings.

I use comfybed for my horses.

Zero dust pretty much, much softer than other wood chip beddings i have tried and reall cheap as well. About £6 for a huge bale!!!!

never looked back since i moved on to it

Thanks for your replies, he's got Laminitis now so i've no choice but to stick with shavings now. It was just a suggestion the vet had made about changing them. I've always been happy with shavings. Will it ever end just one thing after another. But i'm sure we will get through it. Thanks again x
