But you cannot compare ‘no obvious talent’ to Matisse, Dali et al .

I think the world has gone mad to think that these pictures are worthy of being called Art. Call me a snob or ignorant if you wish but there HAS to be *something* that sets an artist apart from everyone else otherwise there’s no point.

But that is exactly what people said about a lot of artists whose work now fetches in the multi millions. And are apparently very talented.

Absolutely, there were even people who said Stubbs' horse paintings were too 'sentimental' to be considered good art. I expect the vast majority of artists that are now revered experienced a degree of criticism to begin with.
