Your thoughts on this please

I think it is disgusting. Another enormously stupid waste of tax payers money. How about financial bonuses for those of us that don't break the law, have to work hard to earn a living and pay our bills!
God these bureaucrats make me angry

And the alternative would probably to lock them down for 24 hours and deal with the fallout the folowing day, risking potential injury to prison officers, other prisoners, etc

You may not like it, but rewarding good behaviour and punishing bad behaviour is what works, if we treat prisoners badly all the time they would have no incentive to learn, improve or access education and skills.

I'm sorry but I can't agree with you. They have access to higher education and all sorts of different learning programmes - that I agree with. The aim is surely to have them come out better people than they went in. But paying them because they didn't riot!! Outrageous!!

I'm really not sure about this one.

My initial reaction is that it is a pretty sad state of affairs if we have to effectively 'bribe' prisoners to behave well because there is insufficient guard cover.

I think fair enough, pay them a small amount for doing a proper job whilst in prison, but this is like paying them for nothing. It looks like bribery. Once the prisoners have got a taste of this who knows what they will do next in order to gain more money for 'good behaviour': They may well manipulate this arrangement.

Pay them for actively working, but just for being reasonably behaved: I don't think so. I think they should be punished for poor behaviour instead.

This seems reasonable to me when you consider that prisons are there to deprive people of their liberty and to rehabilitate offenders. Prisoners who manage to maintain reasonable behaviour when there is minimal supervision are actually demonstrating their ability to regulate their own behaviours, which surely demonstrates the effectiveness of the regime and their inceased self-control, which should be rewarded IMO
