Your thoughts?

A some of you would have figured I board peoples dogs when owners go on holidays.....I have been busy recently....most of my boarders are very well behaved...however recently I have had a few hat are plain NUMB for want of a better word

with some rather bad habits and naughty behaviour.....from pulling on the lead,like they have never been walked before to jumping on bentches and stealing food, to completley disobeying a simple command to answer to their name

problems easily corrected.....but is it my place and is there a point in even bothering when they will go home and be allowed to carry out the same behaviour

I have had a lot of nice comments of people stating that their dogs have returned home a better and more well behaved dogs.....should I be putting time into this or just simply looking after them to the best of my ability

I can put up with most of it with no stress/hassle, whilst they are with me

but it is hard not to correct the behaviour..its like second nature or something

What would u do?
Or expect me to do?....does that make sense

The rescue dogs have better manners and they have only been in a few weeks

I think you probably can't help trying to correct them, even if it's not really part of the job.

Dunno... I'd say it's not your place, but I imagine, if you ignore their bad behaviour, it probably makes life more difficult for you, yes?

Well mainly the pulling....Im not accustomed to getting my arms ripped out with large dogs on the end of the lead....esp when I have a rotti, Akita and deerhound that feel like fresh air to walk

but the rest I could probabley ignore.

Its really difficult because you are providing a service and want happy customers who recommend and return. I think most people would be grateful of a few pointers and tips to make dog ownership easier and more enjoyable. A lot of people put up with habits and end up "living with the dog instead of the dog living with them".

I really belive in this, that you can say almost anything to anyone, is how you say it and the manner in which you do it. So if you did want to encourage them to continue your efforts and work, you could quite nicely spent a bit of time chatting about their dog (big smiles etc) and put your point across in a friendly, helpful way.

You may even find that word spreads and you end up with people coming for training classes. I would not worry, you are clearly doing a good job and the effort you are putting in should not go to waste, I am quite sure you will be appreciated.

I do try to slip in a few pointers...but normally I wont give any advice unless asked in regard to training/behaviour....I normally keep my energy and focus on the rescues.
I do get alot of people asking..."could u sort this problem out...whilst they are with u"....but I dont think they carry on with the training/corrections when they go home....so there is not much point really

they do remember when they come back to me....as they are good as gold again

i fully sympathis with you as i often had this problem when i worked in boarding kennels, the biggest problem was the pulling on leads which i detest as i have carpol tunnel in both wrists and can be very uncomfortable when pulled, i used to teach the dogs manners but most owners did not keep it up so you had to go through the whole process again, i would just do what you feel you need to and save your energy for the dogs that mite get the same treatment at home

yeah....in some cases it does seem to be a waste of time

when they hit home turf again

maybe im comparing them to my angelic like doggies
